171 Sheath

Can anyone help me on this? Seeing a few of these in the market place, a claimed 'USA' sheath for the 171UH. I never saw one like this before, without the stone pocket.

Please note... I see one of our forum members bidding on one of these on ebay right now.. let's give him a break, huh? I feel guilty thinking that bringing this up will cost him his sheath.

Phil, if you're referring to me, I already bought one using "Buy it Now," and only placed a bid on another one. There's a bunch of them that just hit eBay, some dealers say made in the US, others don't specify the origin, even though I'm sure they all came from the same place, whether here or China.
 
Every illustration I have of both first and second production runs which show a sheath, shows the stone pocket sheath. Every one I have seen sold on eBay which had a sheath that could be thought of as original had a stone pocket sheath. Maybe these were made by Atchison and never shipped? They were listed as an unsecured creditor for trade goods. Maybe a third run was in the offing, or they were made as replacement stock? Sorry, no real clues, just guesses. If they are U.S. and they do fit, it would be a cheap option for owners of users with missing or ruined sheaths.

I don't know if this will help since I haven't received this knife and sheath yet but check out Ebay #6610291623.The sheath looks flat but I don't know if this is original.Also check out the 150uh thread on here.LT remembered that the sheath that came with some 153UH's were flat with no stone.Arnold
 
Wasn't there a thread about cost savings by having sheaths made overseas, shipped back to Ellenville, and they still cost less than in-house produced sheaths? Sorry I can't come up with it....but maybe from a factory stockpile produced somewhere else? Or, maybe not.

The lack of a stone pocket on a 171 sheath is not a rarity.....Heck, all mine come without a stone pocket.
