Hi,

After having read all the threads that a search for Schrade 171 UH would bring up, I still have a few questions. Just bought one off of Ebay after years of wanting one. Looks like it's a first run with a carbon blade and a serial # of 83625, which by Codger's info and someone saying a yearly run of 10,000 manufactured, would 1979 be about right? Also, the tang stamp is etched, not stamped, and the handle looks like bone rather than Delrin, it has the grain lines that bone would have on the white parts. I've tried to show this in the pics. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks!

Bob

P.S. Are my pics showing? They did on a preview. Seems like sometimes they do, sometimes they don't.

I can't help on the year, but the knife is 100% standard; the handle is definitely Delrin from the Staglon molds. Sometimes the older bigger pieces have taken on that rough look but it is not bone.

Ok thanks, I saw some people saying their tang marks were stamped not etched which is why I asked. I kinda figured it was Delrin but it sure looks like bone with that weathering. Appreciate the fast reply.

Definitely Delrin Handle. Your identical 171UH is displayed in the Brochure for the 1980 'Easy Vendor' Uncle Henry 'Signature Collection'...together with other Uncle Henry knives.....1980 Production knife.

Thanks, that would confirm what I tried to figure from the various numbers I saw in the threads, I thought between 78 and 81. I graduated from high school in 1980 lol. I just Googled that brochure, thanks for the tip.

I still wonder about the tang stamp being etched instead of stamped.

The etch you show in your second picture is on the blade, not the tang, and is normal. The tang stamps will be just above the guard, shown here.

Very interesting, never seen one like that before. Maybe Eric ( ea42 ea42 ) could chime in with some additional info.
I also notice that the one in the other thread has a serial number less than a thousand away from mine. Maybe a cost-cutting measure after a bad quarter. :)
