I just found a Buch 174 for $14 dollars and decided to pick it up. At the time I had never heard of Buck knives (I am just getting into knives seriously) and I was curious if this is in your oppinion a good knife for the price.

Thanks,
Cody

I paid $27 for my 174 a couple of years ago at Walmart. Then later I picked up the longer 179 that I usually EDC. The 174 is laying right here on my desk begging me to sharpen it.

I like the frame lock and these have worked great for me.

I think you got a great deal for $14

I've been tempted to try a 174. Let us know what you think of it. Where did you find one for $14?

Messy,
Play with the 174 and 179 both. . I like the 174, but it is just a little shy of a fist full. Had I found the 179 first, I wouldn't have gotten the 174. Not that I don't use and carry the 174, I just prefer the longer handle of the 179. Better holding leverage for me.

Oh yeah,,, after a while, put a little dab of blue locktite on the clip screws. They work loose every few months or so.

I've been carrying the Buck Mayo Cutback for the past few months and am very happy with it. Bass Pro had been selling them for $12.88, I bought several at that price for family and friends.

HOE3, what do you expect? People that know how to spell four letter words? :D Hell, I read something a few minutes ago posted by somebody who can't even spell three letter words. He wrote "R U" instead of "Are you." Is that supposed to be cool, urban, or what? Never mind me, I'm just old school!

Yup, I found it at Bass Pro. Thought it felt sturdy so I picked it up. I've had it for long enough to review it. So I decided that I would give a full (if short) review.
Short review:

After a few days of testing it out I find that it is probably the easieast non-assist knife in my collection to thumb stub open. Something about how the blade is weighted makes it seem to just slide out even with only a relatively small push. It feels very smooth when I do this. When it is open there is, as far as I can tell, absolutely no blade play at all. The frame lock feels very sturdy and gives very good resistance when closed. I wouldn't be at all worried about accidentaly squeezing too hard and closing the knife on my hand. As far as the blade itself, it also has a sturdy thick feel about it. Now that I have just got done talking about how sturdy this knife feels, you'd probably expect it to be too bulky for an EDC pocket carry. Not at all, it is actually very slim and almost rivals my Kershaw Leek in slimness.

Aesthetics: 7
Durability: 9 (If I had an extra I'd put it through some really strenueous tests to tell for sure, but I am too tight on money to buy one just to try and break it)
Ease of Carry: 8
Locking mechanism: 9
Ease of Opening(one handed): 9

Conclusion: My new EDC. Very good knife for the price. Fully recommended to anyone on a fairly tight budget, or who wants a simple, durable knife that they don't have to worry too much about losing.
