Hi i'm new here to Bladeforums and after sitting here reading the thread "What's in your bedroom?" i thought what would be the best choice for a self defence weopon out of what i have i my room.

I have quite a few folders but in the end it came down to the two largest blades i had in my room, an 18" machete and a 12" japanese style fixed blade. It's a competition between the two with the machete being able to deal more power but leaving a fair bit of time between each swing and the fixed blade not being able to deal as much power but is much lighter and faster.

Which would you choose?

The other consideration is that you don't have a lot of room to use a machete indoors. In an open space the machete would be fine, but in a hall the tanto would be better. My personal choice for a self-defense knife would be my Randall Mod 14, which is not my biggest blade, but it is the best-handling and is small enoguh to actually carry.

I don't know how old you are, but if you are serious about self-defense, get an 18 or 20 inch barreled shotgun as soon as is legally possible. Use #9 shot indoors to minimize overpenetration.
