How much does the 18 incher cost? Would it take very long for the kamis to get a scrolled buttcap for it? I'm planning to get one this summer after the Parents' days (Mother's and Father's day).

You'd have to ask Uncle Bill. The Scrolled buttcaps were pretty flimsy, and just filled with the "Himalayan Epoxy" ( help me out here, Howard, what's the proper name for it? ).

Bill spent a lot of time getting rid of the thin scrolled ones and having the kami's replace them with thick brass plate instead.
I don't imagine the kamis have forgotten to make the other kind though. It would be up to Bill to decide if the hassle was worth doing.
It *shouldn't* be a big problem at all, but then working with two different languages leads to snafu, tarfu, and fubar. Bill may decide to recover from one heart attack first before he lets himself in for another one. As he says, he's got this love/hate relationship with the kamis, and after all these years he still never knows what they're going to send him next.

For what it's worth, Bob, I would suggest staying away from a scrolled buttcap if the khukuri is going to be a "working" khuk. I have used khuks with each kind of buttcap and have found, as Rusty said, that the scrolled caps are a bit flimsy; also, they make handle modifications such as re-shaping more difficult. On the other hand, scrolled buttcaps do look very nice and they will withstand a fair amount of abuse, though not as much as the other type.

Laha.

Many people like the scrolled butcaps. They do tend to loosen, but after you epoxy them in place they seem to stay solid forevermore.

My WWII has a scrolled buttcap, and I like it. The 18" model will most likely be my last purchase for quite a while, so I want to make it a good one with handle carving and the scrolled buttcap. I don't plan to do much chopping or pounding with the buttcap, but thanks for the advice anyway.

Actually, after giving it some thought, I think I will go with the new buttcaps. The khukuri will be beautiful enough with the carving, and I plan to use it as much as possible. I won't have to be so conscious about hitting the buttcap.

Then again, I've got awhile to weigh both possiblities.
