I hate to throw them away, but they are taking up too much space. Many are not in shape to be donated to a library.

I did a favor for a friend and bagged and tagged all his Handloader mags.
That is one great magazine, worth keeping as a reference. But finding the articles you want in old Shooting Times, Guns n Ammo etc is just too much.

One could have organized and used the year-end index as the source guide for each box, but that was more clerical work than I ever could muster.

American Rifleman has improved so much the last few years that they are now worth keeping.

I can give some to a local hotel...maybe there's a young shooter somewhere who would appreciate a pile of old mags.

You are not supposed to throw away mags with your address data in the corner of the covers ( I guess for indentity theft) ...I've seen folks cut that out, and one can rip the cover off too, still more work than I wish to do for these mags. I put one huge load in a black trash bag and threw it into a dumpster.

It feels strange. The mags represent different times and memories associated with myself and the hobby/lifestyle. It feels a little like getting rid of a friend.....but not that MUCH.

Munk: I had the same problem with a bunch of gun mags; not as many as you have, but about 4 cardboard boxes full. I didn't really want them anymore, but hated to throw them away.

I eventually gave them to a local barber. He tossed a bunch of them on his counter to read and people pick them and read them and take them so its good recycling.

Thanks, Shann; the Barber's an excellent idea. He's a real gunny, too. Ah...small town America- the 'boy's" still gather at Jerry's just to shoot the breeze.

Jerry wanted a Savage 99 and I helped him find one- they are cheaper out here than on the Coast. He also has a 351 Self Loading I would love to own...

I think its a rule that barbers have to be gunnys.

Just saw this old thread; I know how you feel. I've been gathering a minimum of 6 magazines a month for 22 years now, for most of them, 30 for Shooting Times, with a plan to make some $ from them if I could ever get it together. Guess I better get a move on because I am plumb out of space. I love reading the old ones, kind of a blast from the past.

Old (and new) gun wrags, vintage (and new) Soldier of Fortunes. Ahhh... :)

Yellowed pages, coffee stains, crumbs, the strange smell.

My happy place.

Take care.

I had like 15 years worth of United Caprine News and Dairy Goat Journal I kept hesitating to part with. I kept all the Saanen(breed of goat I raise) issues but I donated the rest to my local goat associations library

Why thank you, Munk.

I'm a poet and didn't even know it.

Hoppe's #9, a citizen's cologne. For a kinder, gentler society.

hollowdweller: I'm surprised the goats didn't use the magazines as a dietary supplement. A goat my grandmother used to have was worse than the Hungry-Hungry Hippoes.

Take care.

One who smells faintly of Hoppes 9 and oil is highly likely to be someone worth knowing. I'd take my chances on that over a non-smoking vegitarian any day.

my local barber is not a gunny, he's never been in the armed forces, however, he was the barber out at the royal military staff college nearby, up until the colonel's wife decided to award the contract to one of her cronies. he's shaved and/or barbered quite a few gurkha's and foreign student officers as well in his 40 years there, so he's accumulated as many stories as a gunny...
he also shoots pigeons from his bedroom window with a .22 air rifle (all we're allowed) and is fond of his whiskey.

he barbers in the local village to have something to do, he only charges £3 for a haircut (about $5.50), £2 if you are retired...he could do with a few good US gun mags for us to drool over, tho shipping costs would be prohibative....
