18 Years old to buy knife?

Why is it that on item descriptions on Ebay for knives, seller states that you must be 18 or older to bid? Do you have to be 18 to buy a knife? What are the consequences if you get caught selling a knife to someone under 18? Thanks, Dwain

Anyone can make an eBay account. They dont ask for a credit card unless youre selling.

It may be done because in some places, for example here in SF, it is illegal to sell a knife to a minor, with a few exceptions. It's too much of a hassle to verify that you wouldn't be breaking the law in a particular place, so sellers just impose this standard clause. Consequences for selling to a minor, even if it's illegal in the state/city where the minor lives? Almost certainly none. Unless the minor in question does something naughty with the knife and the local or state authorities figure out who sold it to them and decide to make an example of them.
