The 183 Fixed Contego with a 4.97" blade of S30V could've been a big winner had Benchmade decided to go with the same CPM-M4 steel blade as the 810 Contego folder. If anything the fixed should be M4 and the folder S30V although both with M4 is ideal. It just doesn't make sense to me. Was it just so that it could have a lower price?! I don't see that many complaining about sharpening M4.

Additionally, they could've made it in three sizes: 2.97", 3.97" and 4.97".

I must say the smooth, contoured black G10 handles look nice and comfortable. Would love that on the Contego folder.

Or M390 so its tough, but still using a stainless blade which some of us prefer, especially if the knife is primarily designed for outdoor use.

This would have been a great knife for BM to step into 3V I think. S30V while a great blade steel does indeed seem like a cop out with this knife. How is the fixed blade version produced with a "lesser" steel than the folding version.

It's a situation where the folder will be "tougher" than the fixed blade. S30V is folder steel. They already crossed the fixed S30V bridge with the 162 Bushcrafter.

I'm sure the 183 won't be a slouch, but an M4 fixed blade would have been pretty neat.

I'd like something super tough, like 3v myself.

M4 would've been nice. I don't think I'd need high toughness in 5" fixed blade, if i had a choice I'd go for better edge holding, S90V, 110V, M4 at high hardness, even M390... Very nice looking knife though, I like it much better than its folding variant.

M390 would have been nice but would cost as much as M4 if cost was a factor. Honestly, I'd prefer D2 to S30V for a hard use fixed blade.
