I'm in the process of making a old type military frog for an old sheath. Is this type of frog a western/British influence? The only ones I see are on the service issue that HI makes.

There are quite a few types. Here are 3 old Nepali rigs that can adjust to any scabbard.

Thanks jp,
hope the book is loaded down with photos on top of photos.

Might even think of putting out a gallery addendum
with tons of pics.

BTW, would you happen to be familiar with a fellow by the name of
Jim Clark who has an interest in ethnic asian/pacific edged weapons?

John what do you use on the old scabbards to preserve them? Those look like well nourished leather and most old leather is hard and dried out.
I once bought a very old horsehide valise that was dried in a partially open position. To try and move the leather any way produced a dry crackling sound.
After a half dozen treatments with Carnuba Cream it was a supple as a baby's behind.:D

Dean I bought mine from Tandy Leather a long time ago. It will seperate in the bottle the older it gets, but a good shaking up restores it back to original.
I'm pretty sure that Mid-Continent Leather in Coweta handles it as well as the leather outfit down around sixth street. I think it's called L and C or L/C Leather, but I'm not sure.
they carry some hard to get items and can order others. I had them get me some of the "quick lace" buttons found on many high top boots so I could make hair ties with them. They're still sitting on a shelf in my work room. ;)

DD, the book will have lots and lots of photos. Many more than appear in the on-line chapters.

Leather: I have tried a few of the old tricks and some of the 'specialty' products, but the one I find best is from the shoe company Cole-Haan called leather conditioner and cleaner. I'm sure it's a generic, but the stuff works great. Apply, let it soak in, reapply and rub till it disappears.

excellent pics john! I just compleated the 1849 frog it carryes much better than a regular type, and is easy to adjust for hight, I see why its a mill type quite often i have trouble with a heavy ruck catching my knive handle and hanging up . I ripped off a F/S fighting knive right off my LBE that way I spent a whole FTX carrying it in my cargo pocket hopeing like hell not to loose it!
