I recently purchased a 1917 Remington Bayonet. The knife has surface rust on it, but overall is in great condition. What is the best way to remove the rust & preserve the knife. Since I am fairly new to knife collecting, any information that you could give me would be greatly appreciated.

Thank You

Pictures would help and we love picts:thumbup:
Less is more here, especially if its a collector piece rather than a user.
Personally i use
1) WD-40 or Mineral Oil And Wipe using a soft cloth, Just keep wiping...
If you need anything more aggressive then its on to
2) 000-0000 Steel wool and wd-40 and lightly remove the rust...

Stay away from sanding/dremels etc
Lots of knives have been mangled by a dremel so much so they really should advertise that on the box:)
Pipe cleaners, etc. can be used to get around in nooks, etc.

The key is to just stabilize it not completely clean the hell out of it (i.e "OOHH Shiny") alot of people dont know the difference, i found out the hard way
good luck

Very good advice that. ;)

I am officially very jealous! I have a Remington 1917 that has been wanting one of those for a while now...

I have had good luck with RB17 and 0000 steel wool on blued steel and nickel guns in the past.

Yep good advice, but I use Hoppy's on my blades and 0000 to remove rust. Found that a kerosene base works best at removing old rust. It has a deep penetration that some of the oils don't.
