I recently purchased a 1917 Remington Bayonet. The knife has surface rust on it, but overall is in great condition. What is the best way to remove the rust & preserve the knife. Since I am fairly new to knife collecting, any information that you could give me would be greatly appreciated.

Thank You

First you will need to stabilize the rust, I use mineral oil, but any type of low viscosity oil will do, like a gun oil. Do not use sand paper or scotch brite pads to clean it. 4 ought steel wool used lightly should be ok, be careful not to remove any original finish. Preservation is just keeping it cleaned and oiled, If it has a sheath, store it outside of the sheath.
