Hello all. I hope you can help me with your opinions. I just bought a #4-7 with a pinned stag handle and a brown button Heiser Sheath with a white Washita stone. (see pictures) I was told this was purchased by a WWII soldier in the 1940s. His name is on the knife. (Clarence E. Black Jr.) The blade shows minor use with signs of sharpening. I'd like all your opinions as to date and value. I hope I didn't over do it, but I've never had a chance to buy one this old so I dove in. The same fellow sold me a #2-7 from the late 1960s in a Johnson rough back "tie-down" sheath with the stone pouch removed by the Vietnam Vet who carried it in two tours. This one is named also. (Richard Snodgrass) The blade shows moderate use with a few deeper dings that were stoned out. Please take a look at this one too. I think the pics show all the necessary information, but feel free to aks for more info if you need it to give your opinions. I hope I did good? ? Please tell me? ?

Those are some fine blades with a lot of character. If only they could tell stories. Can't help you with the value, though.

Your Model 4-7" appears to be from 1946-47. Value $2,000 +/- 500. The Model 2, circa 1969 - 1976. Value $400-$500.

Hello Rhett,
Thanks for your imput.

I'm going to go with your "high side" estimates, since I "dove in" way too high on these. (over-my-head) It gets very difficult sometimes because one has to make a "snap" decision in less than 5 seconds as to "buy" or "pass" on the oldest Randall I'd ever held in my hands. Once again, my rule of thumb holds true .... YOU NEVER PAY TOO MUCH . . . YOU ONLY BUY TOO EARLY

Since I'm not going to sell this one for a long time, I'm still doing OK. And this one really looks mean.

I took a picture of the strap (someone asked) in an attempt to help date it better.

By the way, the metal on the inside of the snaps say:

"UNITED CARR" -"FEB. 1946"

.............. JUST KIDDING .............. but wouldn't that make things easier?

Too bad that model 4-7 is so valuable, as I'd love to carry and use one like that. Nice snag, by the way; regardless of what you paid.

I intend on using it. It has just enough character to keep its value with continued mild use. Its like having a sports car, no matter how rare, you gotta take it for a spin once in a while.
