I have been wanting to replace an old Craftsman knife that I bought in the 70's, found that this was the same as a Schrade 1940T. When looking over auctions for a USA made 1940T I find that they go for higher prices than the LB7. To the best of my recollection the LB7 sold for about twice the price of the 1940T back in the day. Any thoughts of why this very simple Old Timer model seems to be going for such a price?

RE: ebay prices of 194OT. it's just in the last 2 - 3 weeks that prices on these and variations like a Schrade-Parker model from '78, have gone very high. prior to that, they could often be had for $20 range.
Why the 194OT in particular (although all USA Schrades have dramatically increased v. recently too), i don't know, although the high bids are coming from ebay members with a very low "score". it's fairly easy to suck in a novice knife collector with the "v. rare pattern now that Imperial Schrade is out of business" hype used by many sellers. but that still does not answer the question: why the common 194OT (and 94OTs as well) "leads the pack" at present ?
my guess: wait a few weeks and these knives will return to more "reasonable" prices. roland

Very nice collectable at the moment the 194OT, like roland says maybe prices may stabilize in a short while.

The prices on Ebay can be perplexing and unpredictable for sure. The 194OT is for sure one that took a very quick hike in the last month or so. In the standard patterns, the 77OT and 8OT have been popular. The 36OT and 44OT have always been high priced since I got in. The fixed blades and folding hunters usually command a nice price, although the 152OT's have calmed down lately.

The thing I have noticed lately is that the age of knife doesn't seem to matter quite as much to quite a few bidders. The people I think Roland is referring to with low Ebay scores seem to be willing to pay as much, if not sometimes more, for more recent production, but that might not be a conscious choice.

Someone made a good observation to me recently, remarking that when they first started collecting, there were always some BIN Schrades offered for ridiculous prices, a price that "no one in their right mind" would pay. Now the going rate is more than the ridiculous BIN price of 18 months ago. I don't try to predict it, I just like to play. I haven't been collecting long enough to do any accurate forecasting.

I still contend more reasonable prices are still there if you are patient. I've bought a lot of Schrade knives. Some I was very patient for, and others not so patient. I stay clear of bidding wars, which is usually the main reason for a high selling price. Especially if there is a greedy sniper waiting at the end of the auction willing to top it off.

And I am one of them...currently in the lead although I can see myself getting sniped. If I win my 194OT it will join my other slipjoints as users.Just got bit hard by the Schrade bug,and decided to focus on Old Timers.

I have paid more for my new Kershaws and Spydercos (which are boxed up and putaway) ,not to mention my bayonets. I'd love for Old Timers to be cheaper...but these other bidders won't let me get it cheap :grumpy:

The deals are still there, depending on what you are looking for. I love the 194OT and I just picked up a slightly used one that looks pretty good in the pic for $9.99 + $3.99 shipping. That one will be a user. I also just won one tonight listed as new and unsharpened for $13.50 plus $6 shipping. It was listed in the title as "Old Timer Linerlock". Must be an end-of-days knife, because the tang stamp says "SHRADE, SKOAL USA", but it had the regular brown delrin scales and Old Timer shield. Maybe not a true collector, but for less than $20 in new condition, I'm OK with it.

See here now, Sheepdogdaddy knew where to look. A Shrade 194OT with durlin handles for 13.50. New, never sharpened. They are not all $45.00 and up Schrade's with Delrin handles.

You caught me Thawk!:D That's the one I just posted about. All I do sometimes is cruise the Schrade section using the "ending soonest" search option and look at everything, because not everything is described as what it truly is.

I had it on my watch list. I done fergot you was the Sheepdog. I'd a sniped you in a heartbeat except I already have two 194OT's in my drawer, and one of them is a nice user with those durlin handles. :D I've benefitted greatly from the fact that all knife auctions aren't put up by good spelers.

I've got several already, but really like them, and it's hard for me to let one go at that price. The only other knife I've got a bigger fetish for is the LB3. It's a great knife, and I kind of think a little underrated. I have about 4 that I keep as users, and several nice keepers in original boxes. I wish Schrade would have diversified the LB3 a little bit like they did the other LBs. Even the little LB1 got a number of scrimshaw variations. I've actually heard mention of an LB3 scrim, but never seen it. Would LOVE to find one.

DaveT63 out bid me today, will have to try again.:(

Todd, that's a reasonable price for that knife. i've bought many knives from that seller; he's very reliable.
i've been regularly participating here for over 1 year now and the variations of Schrades and potential knowledge about them, seems all but infinite.
however, i now know enough to spot many of these Schrade variations and get them for a good price.
Schrade surfin' on the bay and then coming back here to use search function and "Schrades R us" sticky to figure out exactly what you are looking at on the bay, before you bid, is a huge amount of fun and a great way to learn about Schrade.
and as i said about so many variations of their knives, it never gets boring, because you keep coming across knives you never knew were out there.
it's a whole lotta FUN ! roland

My first eBay win
Hide your Visa card NOW!!!!!!!
My 1st Ebay win was a Norlund hatchet for 10 bucks about a year ago
Seems like they go for 20-30 now

Brettknives isn't the famous BRETT from here right?
The guy who "rebuilds" knives? allegedly......

This just proves my point that not EVERYONE with ZERO feedback is involved in shill bidding

Nice looking knife
I think I only have one trapper style
I'm beginning to like the trapper more and more I must say..............

IMPORTANT CORRECTION NEEDED: the term "Bretted" is from BRL and means a knife has been altered but is being presented as original condition.
Brettsknives is NOT this person; just has the same first name.
i have bought many knives from Brettsknives. he is honest, represents his knives accurately, answers emails, and is great to deal with.
his brother also sells knives on ebay (under a different name), and he too is 100% reliable.
i feel this too important to go uncorrected. roland

Roland,
Thanks for the clarification. I've bought a number of knives from Brettsknives as well, and have never seen/had a problem with any. But the term "Bretted" made me wonder. This information makes me feel much better about dealing with him, although, as I said, I've had no reason to distrust him to begin with.

I should have not made an assumption. I will withdraw my comment. Thanks guys.

One factor possibly being overlooked is that the 194OT is a superb user, and most folks who do have one for a user seem to not want to let go of it. After buying (and returning) a few on the 'Bay, unless I'm dealing with a known seller I won't buy one in anything less than new condition. I think there are probably a few others in the same boat with me, and the collectors are competing with the committed users.

In the meantime, if anyone has upgraded and is seeking a new home for a less-than-mint 194OT, send me a PM or email.
