I posted a number of months ago that I found this 1947 Warren Old Faithful boys axe and a couple nice Plumbs at a local second hand shop. I finally got around to hanging it. I chose an 18" handle to keep things compact. In my office I have a Pendleton Glacier National Park Blanket that my parents bought on their honeymoon in 1947 so I painted the stripes on the handle to match the blanket... they are still married and going strong, they are both old and faithful!

A nice job and a nice story (Who said romance is dead). Another thing I like about this post is the very recognisable grimy hands of a person who likes doing this sort of thing. Well Done sir.

Frank-New Zealand,
I am a pastor and ride a desk most of the time, so having another reason to get into my shop and get my hands dirty is always good. Have a great friend in my church from NZ... he represents well.

Very cool, looks like a great job. I have a head that's about that size that I'm looking to hang. I have a 28'' boys axe handle for it but I would really like something shorter and the one you used looks perfect. Did you make it or pick it up somewhere?

A 'house axe' uses the same size eye as a boy's axe but with a shorter ~19" handle. House axe handles are available at my local Do-It Center and online from House Handle.

Thanks! That's exactly the information I was looking for. The places close to me that carry handles have very little selection. I was lucky that I found the boys handle I did. When looking online I wasn't sure about eye size when I came across the shorter ones. Thanks again, that really helps.

Square Peg nailed it. A 28" just felt way too long and made the head sort of disappear. I have a logging supply store near me that carries the "house handle", and for $6 I thought i'd give it a try and see if I liked it. It turned out great and for kindling and light splitting at the fire pit it will be the bomb.

That is cool Elkhunt. Two of my favorite things. Pendleton wool and axes. What kind of shape is the old blanket in?

Real nice shape for its age, no holes a little fraying around the edges. It should last another 65 yrs
