I have been picking up a few 194OT's and have a question. I have noticed that on some of the knives the nail nick is closer to the point of the blade then others. What is the difference? Are some of them older than others? Thanks very much

Humm is this just a bad question or nobody knows the answer?

Are the tang stamps all the same? If so I would guess just a variance in production. But now that I have answered, someone will correct me I'm sure, as this is just a guess.

I only have one of the 194's, so nothing to compare for me. As far as some being older than others, I think they were made from the mid 70s up until the closing in 2004, so I would guess there may be some variations but I couldn't say for sure.

I can tell you the bottom listing has a knife that is older than the first one. The Schrade USA three line listing preceded the two line listing, and in some cases, a three line listing may have been right after they changed to Schrade Walden stamps.

Another stamp that was older than the Schrade USA stamps, was a Schrade NY USA listing. It was also a three line stamp, but was not used in all patterns.

The only boxed knife I have in that pattern is one from the early 90's, and it's stamp is two lines.

As far as the 194OT goes, I don't have a clue when it comes to nail nicks, but I have seen many variations within patterns. Those little subtleties, can only dictate age when you have original packaging or sales receipts that you know are valid.

Also, the blue and silver box was the last box before they shut down the Ellenville plant.

Lastly, if I was considering a 194OT, ... well, they are a very nice sturdy pattern, and there are are many fish in the ocean.

Thanks for the education and wise counsel it is appreciated

I expect it's one of those gradual production changes that may or may not correspond to a change in packaging or tang stamps.

An interesting variation for sure though. It took a sharp eye to catch that one!

Schrade ran the 194OT from 1976 to 2004, so there were bound to be a few minor variances along the way. My two examples both had the nail nick in the same position as the 2004 example.

There was a red bone handled Trademan Series "The Miner" in the same pattern.

Hey this is very interesting to me Thanks so much. I'm looking for a Cracker Jack, primo 194OT. So if you chaps see one and your not going to buy it for yourself could you please let me know. Thanks so much.
