This subject comes up often, and I always say the same thing: "But how much was an ounce of gold worth in 1951? And how much is it worth today?"

Don,

I can "bring the ad to life" so to speak:

Although the ad is from 1951, the knife depicted was made in the summer of 1945. It was first introduced as just the "Big Game" and initially only came with a 7" blade. Shortly thereafter it was also offered with a 5" blade and became known a the "Model 4 Big Game and Skinner". There are two "tells" to dating the knife this precisley (1) It has the small Randall stamp. You only see this on 7" Models 3 & 4 made mid to late '45. 5 & 6" versions carried it for maybe a year longer. (2) If you look closely, the stag handle has two pins! One pin was dropped within months or even weeks of Bo introducing his post war line of knives. I can count the number of Randalls I've seen with two pins on one hand.

Here is another example. It came up on Nordic knives website about 5-6 years ago and I grabbed it. Dave Harvey told me the gentleman who brought it to him told him he found it in his grandfathers attic still wrapped in 1940's newspaper. I held on to it for a few years and then sold it. A friend of of mine in Texas who only collects Model 4's is now the proud owner.

That is a very interesting choil grind to boot.

Quick check of the online inflation calculator shows that $30 is our current equivalent of $270. Considering our current costs for raw material, shipping, maintenance requirements, regulatory checks and restrictions, customer services, modern wages, employee benefits, taxes, etc. We aren't paying too much for Randall's still. :D

Whatever photo you look at, that knife has the slickest grinds around. Wow. Perfection to my eyes.

Mr. Mathews, are you suggesting in your initial post that it's possible to approximate the age of a given Randall Made knife to within a few years of date of manufacture? Lawdy, say it ain't so...
