I am a "newbie" on this site, and wanted to ask a question about an old Buck knife that I bought in 1954.
I live in Canada, and bought this knife through the mail, paying $11 U.S.along with a Canada customs charge of $6.
It had an exceptionally hard steel, which was very difficult to sharpen, and the original lignum vitae handle.(I also have the original sheath)
I sent the knife back to El Cajon last year to have the edge restored ,and I have not used it for over 15 years,as it is in with all the rest of my Buck collection.
Anyone have any idea what it would be worth as a collectors item?
Not that I would want to part with it,but I would like to know if it has any value as an antique!
Thanks to any and all who care to reply!

I do have a digital camera, and may need a bit of help to be able to post it,but I will give it a try!(my daughter is the camera expert,on how to download into the computer-will get her to walk me through it!)

Bob,
I would love to see a picture of the knife, it sounds nice. In fact, I remember the knife coming through the warrantee department a while back. I was going to try to contact you then to see if i could trade you out of it.
When I saw that you were in Canada I decided it might be to much trouble and reluctantly sent it back.
Trying to put a value on it is somewhat dificult. I collect the knives from this era and for some reason, the ones with lucite handles go for the most money. I have always thought that it was because most collectors are not as familiar with the Lignum vitea handles and are not sure of them. When they see a lucite handle, they instantly recognise it as an older knife.
If I remember correctly, yours was a 105 or 119? I would guess its value to be around $300 to $400 depending on how much blade is left and the condition of the sheath.
I hope this helps,

Wow,Joe,that is very interesting news!
I just checked out the blade length against a new 102 that I have in my collection, and it is about a half inch longer.
I thought that the 118,that was in production in the late 60's early 70's comes the closest for length.
It was also called the Personal, and that is what I thought mine was.
I compared it to a 118 that I have, and they have the same length of blade.
The sheath is still completely intact, and certainly looks well used,as it was my ONLY hunting knife for nearly 40 years.
The blade is in excellent shape, untouched since you guys did the resharpening a year or so ago.
They polished the handle too,and it looks mint!
It was my hunting buddy who suggested I put it away for safekeeping, and now, another 10 years later,it has become the centerpiece for my knife collection, that now consists of over 60 knives, with most of them being Buck!
I will do my darndest to get a photo of it up for all of you to look at.
Thanks for the feedback.
Bob V.
