A friend of mine has been going on and on about how great the early XX 5172 is. As a user.
So today, I found one at good price. (I think) As most are $300 and up I have been seeing. And this one was quite a bit less.

Am not up on case knives, so aside from the missing Case badge, how did I do?
Orig blade? Looks full for its age. Things look OK with this one? Am not a Case collector.
Thanks in advance.

I usually see these in wood, so the stag is a nice find. Your stag looks a little dry...there's plenty of discussion about adding stuff to the stag like oils or creams, that's up to you. Purists will say don't do anything to it. Your call.

Nice knife.

Not sure I have seen one in wood. Yea, should be here next week.
Will give it the mineral oil treatment.

Thanks Paul, reading up on these, seems it might be a bit older than advertised.
Pre 1964... Am sure there are a lot of folks here in the know.
Just now reading up on the years etc.

Clasp knives are a favourite of mine although I only have one.....yours is a beauty.

My bad, I think I was thinking of the Buffalo that comes in wood.

The tang stamp indicates it was made between 1965 and 1969!!
Nice find - good user!!

Looking at the pictures a bit more closely, I have to say you've got a beauty there. That doesn't look to have been used much at all in its life, especially for old it is!!

Yep, was hoping an expert would not say the blade had been replaced. 😁
As its still a full blade.
Will know more when it gets here. (4-5 days)

I'm a super small time case collector. But I believe the 5172 was introduced in 1962/63 for $10.00. Your tang stamp would date it in the 65-69 time frame. It's the transitional knife if it says "Hand Made in USA" vs. "Hand Made USA" on the back of the main blade. I think it came with a dark walnut wood box. I thought it was considered Case's premier folding knife. Nice score!

Thanks, am thinking this is the one. And the lone large 5172 on the side.
But I am no expert on these at all. Just reading about them the last couple days
Only have these few pics. (Long wait for STD Ground shipping...)
