1970's Specialty Knife

Hello all,

I am trying to track down a knife that was sold during the 1970's. It was a fixed blade, large knife with a large stainless steel ball at the hilt. The handles were round aluminum, knurled, hollow with a set of rubber fletchings that could be pulled out for throwing like a spear. These things were fairly heavy and were marketed as for target and hunting. Anyone remember these? Thanks to all in advance.

Hoffritz made something similar back in the 1970s or so...

Magnum Knives sold by Unique Inventions Inc, 4057 Hollister, Houston Texas, circa 1973 - 74.

One model was a dagger, one was an upswept skinner, and a model they called a bowie, which really was just a larger upswept skinner. The blades look like kit blades of the time.

They came in red, blue, or green. The guard looked like a ball bearing, and the handle was a knurled pipe like a traditional hollow handle. The ball bearing "weighted impact member" was supposed to add weight for chopping and no spin throwing.
 
I wasn't around then but it sounds like the "survival" knives with the hollow handles...tons of cheap ones now days usually come with a little compass on the end. Im assuming its that type of knife but without the compass. Just search survival knife hollow handle and hit image...is that the style of knife your talking about? Like the randal model 18.

While I certainly share your sentiments towards "mall ninja" knives, the Buck 184 isn't one of them. Although it followed the 80s hollow handled survival knife fad, the Buck 184 is, along other knives, on display at the US Navy Seals Museum in Ft. Pierce, Florida.

As for this Lawn Jart knife...all I can say is "wow"....
 
:eek: That's pretty dang cool , IMO , especially if it actually flew true like a dart ( no spin) . :cool:
 
Just an update.....I found the knife on Ebay and purchased it. It appears to be nearly brand new with no evidence of having ever been sharpened. Background on this is that my favorite uncle had the larger version back in the 70's. Used it often to chop the legs off of small game and hack through deer ribs. This has more sentimental value than intrinsic so I will hang on to it and pass it on to my grandson when he is old enough to hear the stories and appreciate it for what it is. Please update us on how this thing throws. It doesn't look very aerodynamic but who knows? It may fly like a dart.
 
Put it on Ebay, whatever you get for it is what is was worth.
