Hi guys. First time poster on this board. I collect military and fixed blades. I found this yesterday in a box of loose knives at the Virginia Beach Gun Show. I grew up in the 70s with Bucks, and always wanted one of their sheath knives. I knew the grip color was uncommon, so I haggled down to $60 and bought it. I researched after, and all the great information on this board and other sites tells me this is very likely a 1973-made knife due to the telltale lanyard hole; three-line markings; thick, maroon, fine-textured micarta grips; and correct swing scabbard. I have taken some photos of areas not shown in other threads as a way of saying thanks for the knowledge, and please share comments and thoughts. I won't be selling it, so I am not trolling for EBay write-up comments (we see newbs do that all the time on gunboards.com forums). Photos linked below; click for a full thumbnail.

I don't believe your 124 is a 1970's production.I don't see a lanyard hole either.

It's probably a 1980's production.It's still a good find.

The experts will be along and provide more definitive info.

You do see the leather thong passing through the pommel right?

Oh yes,I see it now.I had to click on the photo to show a larger picture.

I'm no expert by any means, just my humble opinion.

The thong hole would place it before '80's production.

Congrats for a good find.

It is indeed a 1973 model 124. Good photos. When you see maroon micarta with a 3 line stamp, that's a sure bet. My 1973 model 124 does not have as good a sheath. You got it for about half price. Guys come on here all the time and ask us questions about a Buck knife, getting good information and then the same day post it for sale. Free country.
But I always feel taken. Welcome Brad. You came here posting a good model. DM

Very nice Buck 124 Brad. I just learned something about the combination of features that makes your knife a 1973. I have two but none with a lanyard hole and maroon Micarta - looks very sharp! OH

Thanks guys. It has seen light use at best. The clunky grip feel grows on you. I wish it had the box.

Brad, your clunky grip is not clunky at all once you hold a current model. I have a wood handle model from the early 1980's, which is nicely rounded, very similar to yours, and a 2012 with black micarta - now it's CLUNKY! OH

Welcome, and I second what Old Hunter said! Great find, nice knife. The one in my avatar is 1967, not clunky at all, beefy yes, not clunky. Preston

Here is a 1973 model 124. I don't have the maroon micarta 1973. But it has a lanyard hole, swivel sheath, 3 line stamp and black micarta. With stainless pommel. DM

Hi Brad,

Welcome to the Buck Forum and what a beautiful knife to post photo's of. Your Redhead 124 is correct for the date you stated and finding it for $60 was a read deal or should I say steal! I have alway loved the 122/124 knives and have a few in my pile. Your knife is in exceptional shape for it's age and the current value for that some what uncommon version is about 4 times what you paid for it, do a search of the auction sites (great Job). Thanks for sharing it with all us buck nuts.

Here is a shot of 124's with a redhead in the bunch.

The redhead micarta was only made in 73 and is a htf knife. Nice addition.

Didn't know they were only made in 73. Just sold mine on eBay. I think it was only on there for a day or so. I posted it here for sale first but no takers.

skyler, hang around and keep reading as there is a lot to learn here. Someone on the bay will know. DM

These are my three maroon 124 I could find. One of them I traded for a redhead 106.
