You are correct on the 1980 and you got a real good price.

Congrats!!!

(You didn't find that on e-Bay, did you?)

Yes I found it on ebay, I didn't think my bid would win, I think it had six bids when I put mine in, I didn't even bother watching it end. What steel did Buck use for these, was it 440C?

Thanks, it's pretty blunt but also looks like it's never been sharpened, locks up absolutley solid too. I bought a 110 from Walmart last year and that had really bad blade play.

thats odd-I hope you returned it.

I actually fixed it myself, you'll probably cringe at this, I stuck the pivot end in a bench vise and tightened it up, and no more blade play! Glad I didn't have to do this with the Ranger.

One more question. Why did Buck stop using 440C? I have no problems with Bucks 420HC, it just seems like an odd move to make.

I believe better corrosion resistance and better economy without sacrificing very much performance.

Thankyou, you guys in the Buck forum rule! I'm a fairly recent convert to Bucks (only three so far) I see more in my future :D

Sawyer, Great purchase, good model and price as well . To keep up with demand Buck went to fine blanking their blades and that method of production . The composition of 440C did not agree with this and ate up the tooling . So, a steel change was inorder . This occured in 1981, so, you have a model that was bladed with the last of the 440C . Also, their heat treat was getting real good at that time . A double bonus . DM

Imafritz, Your welcome . Sawyer, Thats why many of us say, if you went out and bought a good quality locking folder, with that quality blade steel, real macassar ebony handles and a leather sheath . The package could run near 100$ . Thats a value statement of that model . DM

So is this more of a collectors piece than a user? My main desire was for a Ranger to carry around and use, I just didn't want to pay full price. It's only after I won it I looked on here and saw the date code thread and looked into it, the ebay description said it was an older model but not how old.

Sawyer, If you desire to use it --- its a first class knife for that . You need not take a step back among knowledgeable knife guys when you pull that model out to cut something they ask . Just go ahead and step to the front of the line . DM

Use it, you'll find that it takes a little skill to get a good edge, but the edge keeps. I've got a 110 3dot that I like a lot.

Thanks :) I've been eyeing up Rangers for a few weeks, I love the look and feel of it, I like the 110 but wanted a smaller version. I shall carry it with pride and use it but not abuse it :)

I have a 3 dot 112 finger groove model I bought when I was 14 or 15. I've had it ever since then but only started using it in the last couple of months. It's now one of my favorite knives (and I own Striders, Al Mars, Spydercos, Benchmades, Emersons, etc.)
Nice find.

Nice find.

I have a few Spydercos and Benchmades myself, but since I got the 110 late last year I started to get a bit bored with modern style folders. I had the generic foreign copy of a 110 when I was a teenager, I guess I wanted some knives that bought back those memories of when I first got into knives.
I just ran the Ranger over the Spyderco sharpmaker and now it shaves hair, very impressive :)
