Greetings Buck Fans: AS my name would indicate I am mainly a Spyderco collector/afficionado but Buck has also been near and dear to my heart as I've kept many of the Buck knives I've accumulated over the years.

I just got one of my older Bucks out of my footlocker this morning and I will admit that I don't know much about it. It is a Buck model 119 fixed blade with a black leather sheath with a top part of the sheath that pivots. I got it as a Christmas present in Dec 1981.

My #1 question is: What blade does that 1981 model 119 Buck have. I have heard it's either 420 or 440C. I'll let you Buck experts set the record straight.

Also I've heard that particular sheath that came on that knife that has the pivoting top portion is considered somewhat collectible>> as least so I've been told by a couple of hunting buddies.

Look forward to your replies as always :)

JD,

Late 1980 and 1981 was the period Buck was moving into an new larger facility and it was about this time that they switched from 440C to 425M. 420HC was not in use till about 1994 I believe so we know its one of the first two.

Of course, the real question is when it was made not when you got it. How many maroon micarta washers does it have? Not much help am I? Someone will be along with more knowledge on that sheath and possiblity dates it was used and then we can narrow down to which steel you have.

But the best guess is 425M which with a Bos HT is quite good stuff.

JD,Welcome.Flat, is correct.Mostly its 425M (one black spacer in front guard). That is a good user steel.I've used those alot.On that sheath, yes they are hard to find.I have MANY Bucks and notone of those sheaths DM
