1986 and I bought the Carver 2000

That was the year of my treats. I was single, employed, and had more money then I knew what to do with. A close-out on a Carver 2000 Reciever for 800 and some odd assorted bucks.

I had fun with that Reciever. I blew most of the cones in my Polks with that reciever. Jake brought a mouse into the home one evening and laid it directly in front of the Carver 2000; an offering. I could have killed him. I was in a rage. That mouse might be impossible to find and take residence under the shelf near the Carver. It might one day eat Carver wires. But I found the mouse, shot it with a pellet gun, and Jake was forgiven. Good cat and good stereo in those days.

The Carver saw me married, I let the duoplex merge into the front of the house, and rented the whole damn thing.

Carver saw several people get turned on to music, folk, blues, fringe. Carver saw my new children as they appeared and then grew, each seeking to turn on or twist one of Carver's knobs as they matured. See what happens when the volumn knob is cranked all the way round? A screaming, crying baby and a big fat white noise roar before the silence of the fuse.

The last several years have been hard on the gray box. Knobs grew brittle and went South. The fuse insert broke. The Sonic Holography went away. And today, when I tried to turn it on, it refused. My Mother in law watched our children while I was in Texas. She says all she did was press the switch and it didn't work. Probably. Several blinds in the house were pulled down to the floor as well, not working either.

I might disect the machine tomorow and see about that switch. But the Carver is almost 20 years old. No money at present for these things but some day maybe a new reciever, or even just an pre-amp and an amp.

A good reciever is like an old hunting dog you hate to see go blind. You keep it around as long as you can.

Heh, that receiver has seen some times. I bet you can get it repaired, if you can't repair it yourself. They still made things to last back then. I've always wanted a Carver... they're a lot more than $800 nowadays :)

I found a site where you can get Carver power amps for under a 1000, but in another site, Sundance stuff, which is Carver's company now, (?) had equipment between 2000 and 4000
Anyone heard of Crown?

Munk,

"I...I feel your pain...." (spoken in the best fat, lecherous, Arkansas hillbilly
voice :barf: )

I'm looking at my precious but now inoperative Fisher SA-300
(circa 1961 vacuum tube power amp). On my better days, sometimes I can bring myself to beleive that there exists a replacement power transformer and perhaps a couple of new electrolytic filter condensors, somewhere in the universe.

Carver was legendary gear. Don't give up on trying to get yours repaired.

gyr,

I think you just stated the most profound justification for everything I have bought, traded for, and acquired! :D That definitely includes all the HI Khukuris I own.

....and of the good in life.

Because we forget.

In the 70's & 80's, Crown provided some of the top of the line power amps; usually back then two channel with the small ones being in the 400 watt range. I haven't kept up with much of the newer stuff, but Crown used to be really high quality equipment. I have an old Carver receiver & amp too. Carver is good stuff imo. Crown was used by a lot of groups in the '70s because they produced so much useable power & were really road worthy.

I don't have a web address, but you might check with AudioClassic in Woodside, N.Y. They carry a lot of new & used high-end equipment & used to do repair & warranty work on just about any brand you would find in this country. I've always been pleased with the service I received from them. They carry a lot of different types of turntables & turntable cartridges also.

Thanks, DKP

Crown has a web site. Carver is still in business, though not with the man Carver any longer, and they have a new generation of amps that look impressive and are affordable too. (under a 1000)

I'm shipping my Carver to a place in Missoula called Strattens. They fixed my Nakamichi tape deck once.

I have a Lynn Axis turntable.

Back in the early 1970s I used to hang around a small local (non-chain) stereo shop a lot. They did repairs and custom installations as well. I recall the night my buddy showed me the repair manual for the very highly regarded Crown DC300 power amp. The title on the cover was

"300 Watts and a Puff of Smoke!"

Lord, Lord, I hope that's not true today!!!

I've been looking hard at Crown. The Carver's I'm seeing are all for public address events.

All I need is 3000 dollars, well, 3500; honest.

The Crown K1 can be had for about 1100. A great pair of Polk Lsi 25's ... I dunno, I was hoping 1500. Need a preamp too.

And a clean signal. Now, where in heck am I going to get a clean signal? Gimme a break!!!
