Looks like my 110 has a rectangle or dot inside the date code. Does anyone have any information on this one? Thanks

I don't know exactly, I know sometimes Bos will stamp a knife with a single punch for a hardness test, I have a Buckmaster with no date code but has the dot...

I'm pretty sure that's not a hardness test dot... I've heard of a few 1987 112's with this date configuration showing up, but never a 110. Anyone else have one?

I have seen these a few times with the much smaller dot on the left:

The second photo is the one I have seen. Your first one I don't know and I don't know why it is that large. I would doubt it
is a heat treat test. My blades are tested and I'm familiar with the dot this leaves. DM

Seems like I vaguely recall some information from way back that it indicated a mid-year change in construction of the knife.

There have been a few threads about these stamps over the years. I don't remember anyone ever giving a "this it why there is a dot" answer. I have a 1987 or 1988 gold etched 112 that has that stamp, the other day I was looking at some 501/521s and found one also (never knew I had it). Here is an old thread look at post #15 for their 112 photo you stated you thought there were 112s (now you can see them).

I doubt the "mid year change" idea, there would be a lot more of them showing up. I've never seen another 110 with that date stamp.

I go back and do searches for odd 112's and a few weeks ago I run into a reference to this tang stamp on a 112. Larry Oden was mentioned as the owner. It was nickel silver, Black PolyPearl and something else was odd about the blade. I made a mental note to ask him about it the next time I was in contact with him. In a newsletter from the 90's there's a discussion about this and other odd tang stamps..

Maybe you should do some searching in the archives and find some more discussions on the topic. I linked the old one so you could see it's been talked about before and to let you see the 112 version. As I said I don't remember any real answer for the dots. Some folks stated they thought the 87/88 year stamp was placed over previous dot stamped blades (not likely IMHO). Maybe if we were at the Buck plant this week with your knife and the ones I have someone could/would be able to truly answer the question.

JB is on the right track about searching in the archives. This one that discusses the exact same topic less than a year ago. So far no real explanation.

THANKS FOR ALL THE REPLIES! I've read most of the old posts. There are pics of 1987 112's with the dot on the right, but no pics of 1987 110's with the right-side dot. Quite a few 1987 110's have the dot on the left. Maybe that one designates the mid-year design change...

Still looking for pictures of the 1987 110 with the dot on the right, inside of the date code.

For whatever reason that Buck placed the dot in the first place, it is possible that they just placed the dot in different locations on the 110 and 112.

When you look at my first picture of the dot/square inside the date stamp, it looks like it is a part of the original blade stamp. The same is true for the 112's with the dot inside the date stamp. On the 1987's with the dot to the left (my 2nd pic), it looks like it was a later addition to the stamp. Also, look at the difference in the 1's in 110 on the two stamps. Also, the "O" touches the "C" in BUCK on the 1st stamp. Definitely a different 1987 stamp.

Reminds me of Pac-man. :D

If the “O” is touching the “C” in BUCK, it might be a fake. :D

"Fake" crossed my mind. I'd imagine they'd have to make 100's of them (and I've only seen one in ~45 years of looking), considering most people wouldn't pay more than $30 for one. Even then, I'm not sure there would be a lot of profit in it.;)

Now, they could have added the dot. However, it looks like it was part of the original stamping...
