Well, here's another interesting "surprise" that Lalit is sending over.

quack.jpg

This isn't actually a picture of the khukuri, but it's the khukuri upon which this model is based. Story: I got this photo from an advanced khukuri collector. He'd been given the piece in Afganistan of all places (I'll give you a guess as to which 3 letter agency this guy worked for). Anyway, one of Lalit's Australian friends saw the khukuri on our site, and had to have one. So Lalit is making two. One for him and one for me. I have NO IDEA how close it's going to come to the pictured khukuri, but I wanted to see what you all thought of the blade shape. Comments?

Craig,
Please post a picture and dimensions when it comes in. If it's close to the original, I definitely would like to order one.

Craig, you can add me to the list. This is a khukuri I most definitely want to get my hands on!

Wow! I didn't expect this kind of response. I definitely have ONE coming, which, if I don't auction it, Berk has first shot at. But not to worry, Steven, there are more on the way now that I know it is "forumite approved."

Craig,

I'd like to have one myself. Count me in.

Ha! I'm not at all sure. All it says on the packing list is "19th century khukuri." I may be totally wrong on which one Lalit is talking about so we'll have to wait and see. But whatever comes our way, you'll be sure that sometime down the line the above khukuri will become available. It's new (or old) and different.

And Ben: Consider yourself counted!

Craig,
Compare your Company Khuk with this 1908 picture of "A TYPE OF THE MOST DETERMINED FIGHTERS ON THE INDIAN FRONTIER: A GURKHA SHARPENING HIS KHOOKREE". The caption further identifies this as a member of the 5th Regiment. As noted in Farwell's The Gurkhas, "Although other Gurkha regiments served on the North-West Frontier [the long stretch of tribal territory that separated British India from Afghanistan], it was the 5th Gurkhas...which served the longest; it stayed for ninety years. It became the most famous and most decorated of the Gurkha regiments and its soldiers won seven Victoria Crosses." The tale of how that particular knife came to be in Afghanistan must be fascinating indeed.

I wish that even the current steward of this piece knew the whole story. He was working in a small desert town (or something picturesque like that) and had been working with some "people" who knew he liked khukuris (he carried one). The guy ran up to him and said "Steve, Steve. . . look what I have for you" (not the guy's real name). And the khukuri was thus bestowed as a gift to the current owner. I am not sure what we'll call the piece, but maybe the piece should be called "The 5th Regimental Khukuri."

Craig,

The more I look at the 5th Regimental, the more I slobber. If the one being sent is anything even close, I think you better send off an order ASAP, cuz I think it will be a real good seller. Or even import just the blade so that we (me) could add our own handle ala the WWIII.

I'd say let's see what the example that Lalit has sent looks like, how it performs and then..., if it gets a generally good review, and.... if any minor(hopefully no flaws) flaws can be easily remedied, then this would be a good khukuri to have. i want to hear someone's hands on experience with this khukuri.

Craig, I don't see the curved spine of an AK, or slab tang & pins of a Panawal.

That's why I'm just not sure what to expect. Whatever he IS sending, you'd better believe that I'm going to ask for a couple of the afganistan khukuris.

What is a Forward Curving Khukuru? I've never heard of that before (although I can see how it could be called that looking at the picture).

And guys: I just placed my next order with Lalit, and it included 6 of the "Afganistan Khukuris" so we'll be in business in a few weeks - they're coming with the USMC order.

I'd guess about ninety to a hundred bucks. They'll be a "limited edition" run (we have so many "standard" models that we don't have the resources to support another regular inventory item, especially since we've decided to pick up the Rieger Khukuri).

Please don't send any money, as I want to wait unil these things get here.

Craig, I'm curious--of what is the "USMC order" comprised?
