A few weeks ago I was commissioned to make a sailor's rigging knife and marlin spike set to be part of a !9th century naval display. The client sent me a few pics of what he had in mind and paid me a visit in my shop to discuss the details, this is what I came up with.
8 1/2" of forged 1095 with an antique finish, copper band with rawhide wraps, braided deerskin thong on both pieces, weathered barn oak scales, marlin spike forged from a Nicholson rat tail file and a rawhide covered sheath to hold them both. The photo is by Scott Roush.

Very classy. The classic Ashley Book of Knots has some excellent photos of authentic sailors' knives and sheathes, and various fobs and lanyards. The knives were usually worn IWB.
