i was at a local surplus store. they have a craftsman 1 hp multi-stage jet pump. its new in the box. the only thing damaged is the box. im always on the lookout for a good 1-2 hp motor pretty cheap. its a wayne home equipment motor, 3500rpm. the price is $89.00 thats a pretty good price for a motor. and my brother uses that kind of pump. does anybody have any comments, good or bad?,,,,willy

I think I would pass if I were you as they have no frame and shafts are genneraly small and threaded. Plus the 3500 rpm is to fast for most work. Good places to find motors are electric motor re-wind shops. I got a 1 1/2 hp dayton like knew for a great price. Just my 2 cents.

I made that mistake- twice! Finally learned that 3600 rpm motors are just too fast, and low on torque, for most knife making applications. Also, you can buy just about any motor you want on Ebay- at very good prices.

im not too concerned about the rpms. i need a motor for a dual disc grinder. the discs would be at each end of a shaft mounted with babbit bearings. i was figuring on using pulleys to slow it down. i made a nwg grinder with plans i got from tracy.its driven by a 2hp compressor motor running at 3600 rpms. i used a 4 pulley, pulley on both the motor and the drive wheel shaft on the grinder.i do however use the slowest pulley combination almost all the time. i do eventually want to replace that motor with a more compatible one. but ive been using it for about 3 years without any major problems. and thats why i posted the thread for some opinions. like my grinder i do eventually want a more compatible motor for it. but as usual money is something i never have enough of to make a setup excatly like i want it. i bought 1 of the 9 inch aluminum discs from tracy. im using the discs that the center is i believe 1 degree higher than the edge so it prevents the other side of the disc from making contact on the blde. but i really want that disc grinder built so i can get a flatter blade. so if i slow it down, what is the speed range that is best for that type of machine for optimum preformance? and if that pump motor is completely incompatible how many hp and rpms are best?...willy

Get a 1 hp or more for what you want that is 1725 rpm and do not set is up on pulley system. Attatch the disc direct to motor shaft. Whenever you use pully's that reduces power.

i want 2 discs so i dont have to grind 1 side blade edge down and the other side up
