This is my first attemt at a bolster. I used mild steel and mild steel pins. The blade is 0-1 and slightly antiqued....

I used spray adhesive to form a gasket between the bolsters and the tang....then peen away with my 4 pound hammer. Not too bad but the pins etched differently than the bolsters but hey...I am not complaining.

I may blue the piece some after the cherry handle tomorrow......

What do you think?

looks really nice. gotta be careful of those steels for the pins and bolsters especially when doing something like etching where each steel reacts so different. try to get the same grade steel, unless you're just polishing it it might come out looking the same. i really like the contrast of the pins though, one of those unexpected things that turns out looking really cool :D i can't wait to see what it looks like with the handles on.

Looks good, one sugestion, drill a couple more holes in the back portion of the tang, it will help lighten the handle up and give it a better ballance.

Don't worry about the pins, looks kinda cool!

Very nice!!! Can't wait to see the finished product.

Well...here she is....Feels GREAT!!!

Bolsters really add a nice touch....

Any advice on keeping the wood clean if I were to want it to end up nice and UNAGED?

You're getting pretty darn good at this knife stuff Brian. I really like that one.

Thanks RL :) :)

Now how do I keep the darn wood clean???Not that I wanted to on this one but if I were to need it clean...That would really stink to glue all this up and turn out black....if the customer wanted say...Birsd eye maple and be popping clean...

Looks very good to me :)
You must seal the wood to keep it clean, wood hardener, wood sealer, thin super glue, etc. Stablized wood will stay clean as will ironwood, cocobolo or rosewood.

Thanks Don,

I may stick with coccobolo or purpleheart...I'd like to get good enough to use the ironwood. That stuff is a beautiful!! and strong....

I will do more of these smaller blades. It feels like a good user.

Nice job. I liked the visible pins, it give sit an 'up for anything' look, kind of like rivets on a battleship :D
