If you are not already following Dave's post on his pass around Salsa, read here first:

http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=194853

Now, having obtained Dave's permission, I'd like to start a copycat: same pass-around idea, different knife, different objective.

I have a #12 Opinel that I have started to customize. I'm interested in seeing if anyone else would like to add their "special touch" to a knife that is basically an all-around beater.

Here's what I'm looking for:

You keep the knife for a few days or even a week, add your custom creation to it, take a picture and post it, and then pass it along!

The end product will be a conglomeration for sure (did you see the size of that word?!? - been at work too long...:D)

"So, Dan, what's in it for me?"

Well, you get to screw up somebody else's knife...oops!:D:D I mean, you get a chance to have some fun and try out some techniques on a knife that is (arguably) one of the more customizable cheapies out there today.

I've included a picture of a new #12. I'll post a picture of the customizing I've started on mine later. OAL is 11" - plenty of room to do some real damage!:D:D

Actually you're the third pass around, there's a Buck 112 and a sharpening video. :p

I had a #12 a long time ago, PLENTY of blade and handle to do something with. Carbon steel right? I polished the blade up on the one I had and used a cold blueing formula on it.

Plus they aren't terribly expensive, just in case.

Good Choice!

Seems I need some sharpening too.:D:D

You are 100% correct. There is so much space to have fun with this one. I imagine you could do filework, a sculpted handle, coloring the blade, reprofiling the blade, polish finish, lanyard hole, thumb stud. Wait a minute, I think I'm onto something here...

If the work on the knife is nice enough (or at least, not too offensive:D) at the end I will offer it up as a prize in one of those "pick a number" contests!

It could be a "Made by Bladeforums" special! A collective customization!

If not (depending on the feedback I get on this one), it could at least be a fun project for a bunch of knifemakers (and wannabes - like me!) to fiddle around with.

What do you all think about that?

Give me your opinions and we'll get this going!

Plus they aren't terribly expensive, just in case.

You got it!
