Hi...

I thought I would ask you CRK fans for some help in my making my first CRK purchase...

First, I'm "on the fence" about the purchase as a whole...

Some years back, I would probably have thought spending $50 on a knife was the absolute max I could justify to myself...

These days, Benchmades are in my collection, and I have definitely broken first the $50 mark, and then the $100, and $150

So, right now, one side of the brain is saying "for $300, you could get 2 nice Benchmades" versus the one CRK

So, I guess that's the hurdle I need to overcome...

Secondly, which model?

I do like the Mnandi's style quite a bit. I tend to gravitate towards smaller knives and "gentlemen's" knives...
The only thing I might not like about the Mnandi, is that it doesn't have thumbstuds, which I've grown accustomed to on my current knives...

Also up for consideration is the Small Sebenza

Is it comparable to the Mnandi in size?

I used to think that way.I have many Spydercos and now I have a lg Bocote Classic and a Lg Website regular.
I made the choise to sell off a few Spydercos to buy the Woodie because of the quailty of the Sebenza. The last few Spydercos I had bought had blade play and I was looking through the exchange and thought why am I spending 138.00 for a Manix with blade play when for 100.00 more I can get a Sebenza.
I can carry the sebenza for years and it will not have any wear except for carry marks and it will keep its value 10 times better than any other production knife.
As for the model, well the woodie I got is the best knife I have ever handled bar none.I like the Classic a little better than the reg and the lg and little better than the Sm.

Also keep an eye out for used, not to long ago there was one for $250, sometimes even less.

I recommend against buying one because you will just start wanting more. Soon a plain won't be enough--it will have to be a wood or computer graphic--and once you realize that others have your graphic you will start wanting a unique graphic or a Liza's special. Stop the maddness before it starts. Just say NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.

I say go for the Mnandi. It has no thumbstud but the nail nicks work great. One handed openning is no problem at all. If a gentlemens knife is what you want, the Mnandi won't dissapoint you. Actually I would say the Mnandi is a very sturdy folder cleverly disquised as a gentlemens knife.

I'm a small Sebenza kinda guy myself.

Yeah I love Spyderco and Benchmade but they all end up developing some sort of bladeplay or liner wear etc etc. A lot of the ones I've had even come straight from the factory with bladeplay. If you use them hard and for a long period they end up having to be retired.

Not the case with a Sebenza.

Thats been my experience anyway.

Exactly. I always carry a Mnandi, because it cuts great and is perfect for "public" use. If you want something that's more robust and will still pass as a gent's knife, go for a small wood inlay Sebenza, in particular a classic model. The regular model wood inlays are considered limited editions and so cost more, and are harder to find, than the classic models.

$300? Bah I paid $350 for my first Sebbie and $450 for my second (shipping included)! Worth every darn penny too! :D

I'm on my 4th Sebenza. Previously owned three but sold them because I was too afraid to use a $300+ knife. Over the last few years I've changed and now carry and use my small classic for any kind of cutting that I require. It's only after you really use a Sebenza do you understand just how great they are. Once you get used to the quality of a Sebenza it's hard to go back to other production knives (well, I do also carry a Strider but that's another story).

ok, I can get the dimensions of the knives from the Chris Reeve website...

I would like to see the "small" Sebenza against something known for a comparison...

Can anyone photo it who owns say some Benchmades?

Is it nearly the size of a 705? Mini Griptillian? 941???

The small Sebenza is more or less the same size as the BM 705, but the blade (the Sebenza's blade, that is) has substantially more belly.

Nathan, that's exactly the information I needed!

Off to a gun show, hopefully they will have a few...if not,
internet ordering time!
