1st Gen BK2 Ideas

I've had my 1st Gen BK2 up in the exchange twice now. Trying to trade it for a 2nd Gen. I know some people want the 1st, and I want the 2nd, so it should work out for someone. Light use, 2nd Gen sheath...

Anyway, I was talking to my brother about it (he is a new BF member and has been lurking around here a bit) and he suggested that since I will likely just end up buying a 2nd Gen and/or the BK10 when it comes around, and it doesn't look like I will get any takers on a trade, why not experiment and try mod'ing it. I hadn't thought about it before, but I like the idea. The problem is, I have no real ideas for the knife.

I thought about stripping it, but I don't care that much for stripped Beckers (although it might be fun if it was my own). I thought about drilling out some holes in the tang to lighten it up like a 2nd Gen. I thought about chopping the blade down a bit to make it a warnie or a broken-back seax (I really like this idea), but there doesn't seem like much blade to work with for a warnie or seax if I take it down to the start of the belly. I even thought about chopping off a bit of the grivory slabs, just above the hole, and grinding the end of the pommel into a bit of a spike. I could do some jimping, or make a spot for a fire steel, but that seems... I don't know... ho-hum. I want to go big or go home.

So, if I continue to have no takers on this 1st Gen for a 2nd, I think I will put it under the knife. I don't want to trash it, but I think I'm willing to go pretty extreme. So? Any ideas? How nuts could I go with it? I have access to quite a bit of equipment, and my brother is a machinist, so I don't think execution will be a real problem if I can just work up the drive.

Lots of great ideas out there. Alot of folks with thin it out, make less than1/4", they say it makes it cut better. I like the seax idea, I've never seen that before.

Lots of good choices out there, just be sure and keep us in the loop as things progress.

Me thinks the Seax is a great idea they came in lengths from 2" to 20" plus. Good luck with what ever direction you take...

weld on some butt stock :)

drill out the tang some

MAKE a second gen :>

The seax would be tough. Ideally, I think it should have no belly. I can't seem to go too acute with the angle. What do you guys think of these mock ups?

More belly:

Less belly:

Not too seax given how obtuse the angle it, but I think that is about as far as I could go. Too Crewman-ish? Not worth it? I know a lot of you probably don't care if it is worth it and are thinking "Hell, as long as he don't touch mine, I don't care what ya do with it! Just show me the pics!" :p But honest feedback is appreciated.

Of course if I do go through with this, one has to wonder what the heck the use of the knife would be...

Interesting.

Losing quit a bit of blade though. Would it maybe be of interest to go for a clip point, bowie style knife, or maybe put a top grind on the edge, like the Randall Model 8 Bird ant Trout knife?

I'm liking this idea... but I worry that taking off that much along the whole length of the blade could f'up the heat treat beyond my skill to prevent or fix.

I already have this knife (BK10) in tan. Grinding the swedge to the false edge would also be tricky for me.

I really like the top one. I'd call it the BK5.5. Or the Mini Camp.

I really like your BK 5.5 Mini Camp idea. Would it still have the same thickness that far into the blade? If so, that would be really cool to see.

It should stay at about the same thickness for the bulk of the length of the blade.

How do you like that knife? What do you find it is best for?

This thing is an overbuilt tank of a knife. If you really want to see what I've put her through, check out this thread, story at the top but pics are near the bottom.

Anyway, back to your Gen-1. I vote on the top pic, the one with more belly. The extra length will be nice and the point will still be very acute.

If you choose to go with the BK5.5 idea, what functions do you see yourself using it for, general camp chores or anything more specific?
