Are the 1st generation XM-18's as highly desired as the new models? The reason i ask is because it seems that i haven't noticed one selling in a couple of years. Not that i have been searching but i just do not remember seeing any sell.

I have one i am thinking about selling it was my EDC for about a year. It's been sharpened 8 or 10 times on a sharpmaker but still has lots and lots of life left in it.I was wondering what would be a good ballpark figure to start at.

How can you tell what Gen xm-18 you have?
Thanks

Wanted to add that i have the XM below. (sorry for the only photo)

You cant really see it in the photo but the blade is stamped.

Well by my observations of other 1st gens, the stud is knurled, the blade is engraved HINDERER and definately not stamped, satin finished hand ground blade spanto tip and what i guess is called beadblasted on the lock side. Also has the orange scale,it is the classic XM 18.

AFAIK,,, easiest way to distinguish the gen's,,,

1st Gen - no liner under scale on non-locking side and maker's mark on blade
2nd Gen - maker's mark on blade
3rd Gen - maker's mark on handle on locking side

Do they all have orange scales? Is this info true? Does anyone know about how many users made in 1st and 2nd gens? Where there flippers or just non-flippers? Just wanted some info if anyone has some,
Thanks

They weren't all orange scales, there are black, brown, and I am sure a number of unique versions as well. Because it is relatively easy to convert a Gen 1 to a full liner and new scale, you'll see them in a variety of other colors.

I have no idea how many were made but not enough, I have been looking for a nice Gen 1 for a while now.

RDA, thanks for the info. The reason I ask is I just found out last week that the there were only 10 XM24 in 1st gen, and they had the full Ti with a cross on it. That's cool as hell and wondering if it was along the same lines for the 1st gen XM18. Is it safe to say they were all 3"?

That is correct on the first 10 XM-24, they were all Ti with the Maltese Cross (I originally mistook it as the Iron Cross), they are very cool. The rest of the XM-24 have been Gen 2, similar in most respects to the Gen 3 XM-24 3.5".

The Gen 1 XM-18 were all 3.5" I believe with the half liner on the scale side.

The Gen 1 XM-18 in 3" were similar in most respects to the Gen 2 XM-18 3.5" with "HINDERER" on the blade and full liner.

and now with the Gen 3 and 4, hinderer is written on the lockbar side. the blade on my Gen 3 is sterile though.

Both appear to be Gen 2 as evidenced by the thumbstud, pretty hard to see any of the other tell tale signs to be certain.

Ok I just found a gen 1 and I see the difference on thumbstud. Thank you sir:)
