First off I owe a HUGE thanks to Dave Larsen. I had the privledge of going to Dave's shop today. I finally got a chance to use REAL knifemaking tools.
I had profiled a piece of O-1 on my sump pump motor w/stone grinding wheel before I got there. We managed to turn that crude piece of steel into something worthy of heat treating and adding a handle to.
Dave was super about showing me the techniques he uses and then sending me to the grinder. I'm pretty impressed with his Bader B-III. Between his instruction/assistance and the smooth running machine I think I did an OK job on the first attempt at grinding. I think I did enough of the grinding to consider it mostly mine
at least my initials made it onto the blade 
If you are a bladeforums.com lurker out there (like me) you really should find a way to beg/borrow/bribe/etc a chance to get some time and experience in a shop.
Now to convince "She Who Must Be Obeyed" to let me spend the cash on tools....
