First off I owe a HUGE thanks to Dave Larsen. I had the privledge of going to Dave's shop today. I finally got a chance to use REAL knifemaking tools.

I had profiled a piece of O-1 on my sump pump motor w/stone grinding wheel before I got there. We managed to turn that crude piece of steel into something worthy of heat treating and adding a handle to.

Dave was super about showing me the techniques he uses and then sending me to the grinder. I'm pretty impressed with his Bader B-III. Between his instruction/assistance and the smooth running machine I think I did an OK job on the first attempt at grinding. I think I did enough of the grinding to consider it mostly mine :) at least my initials made it onto the blade ;)

If you are a bladeforums.com lurker out there (like me) you really should find a way to beg/borrow/bribe/etc a chance to get some time and experience in a shop.

Now to convince "She Who Must Be Obeyed" to let me spend the cash on tools....

Anyway, I didn't take time to take decent pics, but these should do for now:

GREAT JOB bro! I'm glad you had success!
I just bought a brand new BaderIII last night, and I'm about to set up one of Rob Frinks horizontal grinders as soon as I get the motor from an online buddy!
I just wish I had someone around here to show me a few grinding techniques to help me get started right!
FUN STUFF!

razor,

you're going to love the horizontal edge grinder! If I lost mine and was not able to replace it I would retire. That is how much help it is to me. It will save many-many hours per blade and handle work. Some of the best money to spend is on a good horizontal edge grinder.

Andrew I didn't look yesterday but you even got your initials straight! I've never done that...

For what it's worth guys, I've never seen or imagined anyone take to grinding the way Andrew did. In a couple hours he was grinding like I did after two years of sweating and cursing. Amazing. We better watch out for this guy. :D He's going to be doing some of the best work around, and I mean that. Andrew is a natural.

Let's get that baby heat treated Andrew. You might see what the folks around here have to say about doing it the homegrown style, otherwise spend some evening here when you get the chance. One of these days I'll get that HT oven and we can do anything! BWWWAAAHAAHAAHAAaaaaa......

Ok Dave, with first time grinds coming out that nice, it's time to make a video!
Metal butchers like me want to know the techniques.

It's good to see you fellas had a great day in the shop!

Regards,
Greg
