I've put handles on a couple of kits but this is my first knife starting from scratch. Started with a piece of D2, cut it to my pattern and ground the blade. Spent several hours with draw file and sandpaper, didn't like it so I modified, and started over. Next time I will give more thought to my design and commit to it, (I think). I have limited tools, a 4X36 belt sander and a drill press and a couple of files. With no experience I know I made lots of mistakes and I am sure there are more that I don't even know about, but overall I am pleased. Already have bolsters, handles and pins cut and ready to assemble. Any suggestions as to where to send it to have HT, I bought the steel fro Texas Knife.com and see that they will HT, are they OK?

Sorry about no pictures, i'm not currently allowed to post. I tried twice to buy basic membership and site will not accept payment, "(98) This transaction cannot be accepted", don't know what the problem is.

create a photobucket account and use the image link till you get your membership. I have a paid membership and have only used my accounts picture option a couple of times

Thats some impressive file work. As for the membership thing have you tried using paypal option? I couldn't do it the normal way because i'm not in the USA. Just a thought.

Wow really good job! :D

The plunge lines would benefit from a file guide. Also you could epoxy a piece of tile with square edges to your 4x36 grinder. Coupled with the file guide, it would really clean up your plunges. Just a couple cheap idea's that make a HUGE difference.

Jason, the plunge lines were one of my biggest dissappointments but I had already messed them up before I realized it and couldn't think of an easy way to fix it. I will use file guides next time. I am not sure how you're suggesting using the tile, glue it under the belt?

I apologize, I meant to clarify about the tile. Yes under your belt, on the platten. With the bottom maby 1/4" inch below the table hieghth. This gives you something "square" to take advantage of the belts side cutting ability, to make the plunge. I recommend 1/4" thick Glass or Stone tile.

Hard to say for sure since I did it over a week+, but I would estimate 3-4 hours. When I initially did it I thought it was awful, but fter I started sanding and touching up some places it looked better. I practiced on several pieces of tool steel from the harware store prior to attempting this.

Looks a LOT better than the way my first attempt is starting out, lol, but you're working with better tools than I. I just grabbed up whatever I could find around the auto shop and went to town. You could say my first blade is practice for my real first blade (I don't even know what kind of steel it is hehe).

Where did you wind up getting your HT done at?

Finished product looks quite nice!!
