This is the first knife forum I ever visited and don't really know the layout yet. But I recently got interested in making a knife and did so. I've made a couple more since, surely nothing professional but still functional. The first one was made from an old file, some melted down .223 brass and some ironwood. My curiosity got me and I was wondering( if I missed it) there is a thread on pictures of first knives made? That would be real interesting to me.

My first.... 1/4" Ceramcoated 1095 with maple handle scales. Kinda rough I know.

I'm new here too.

Fortunately there are no pictures surviving of the extremely crude Bowie knife I once made at work, out of an old lawnmower blade.

It was big and nasty looking (mostly "stock removal," except for the middle hole, which I filled by welding, which may have not been the best temporing agent). I thought it would be a good camp chopper, but the local traveling junk man thought it was so beautiful (remember he was a junk man) he just had to have it. So I sold the ugly beast with its bolted on handle sides (hey, at least it was "full tang," so-to-speak), for the princely sum of $25 if memory serves.

Here's the first one I made. Ironwood, an old file and some melted down .223 brass. It's pretty basic but a chore with the tools I had and lack of experience.

My first was out of an old file and I did a cord wrapped handle. Dont know where it is anymore but I sure didnt anneal it properly the darn thing was still way too hard....made a heck of a slicer though.

knife looks good. did you cast the guard? If so can you tell how

Yeah, the little cube in the components picture is the melted down .223 brass. I had to make a metal melting pot and then I used an acetylene torch to melt the brass . I made a mold out of plaster . Then you have to grind it down to shape and make the tang slot. That's the time consumer if you have to do it with garage tools.

Here's mine...
