I am new to this forum & to knives....Looking to get my 1st knife. Please give your recommendations to a newbie. Many thanks.

Welcome to the forums. You are sure to learn a great deal here.

Please help us out with a little more information. What style of knife do you want to get? Do you want a folder or a fixed? Do you like tactical knives or something a little more traditional?

With that leadin I am surpised that you haven't gotten a whole lot of recommendations to get a Sebenza. That name should have popped up a dozen or so times already.

Verz,
If you list your primary and secondary uses for the knife you will get much more useful resonses. And also welcome to our little corner of the world.

Later,
Alex

Keith, LMAO. Regarding "first knife", what are you looking to do? For general utility (slicing bagels, opening envelopes, cutting your nails) it's hard to beat a Spyderco Delica. A little larger, and I'd look at the Endura.

What this boils down to is what is your budget, and what do you plan to do with the knife? Give us a few more details, and we can help with figuring out what exactly you should buy.

Swiss army knife, the one that has the phillps screw driver instead of a cork screw.

Too new to know what difference fixed or folder makes. Looking at tactical knives. General use defensive. Price range generally the lower end with my 1st one. Thnaks.

A Swiss Army Knife is a good starter knife. They are good quality and inexpensive. Go for something simple, like a tinker.

Kieth:

For a first knife? Yeah, they're wonderful, satisfying & pleasing just to open & close, & even just look at, but would you recommend a Corvette for a first car? For the utility & general functionality, I agree with many others, can't beat a Spydie for value & quality (although those Seb's just call out like sirens once you've held one & used one...sometimes I ask to borrow my buddy's just to hold it & flip it open - am I healthy?)

Hi Verz, I highly recommend you look at the Cold Steel line of knives. Affordable quality. Check out their website then go to 1 Stop Knife Shop or ebay for some good deals. I assure you that you will have purchased a quality knife and one that can help you start figuring out what your next knife should be like.
If you decide you want a large fixed blade I can recommend also the Becker CU7. Another excellent "foundation" knife.
Spending more money will not guarantee a better knife.
Camillus manufactures knives for both Cold Steel and Becker as well as an extensive line of their own.
If these knives seem expensive to you now, in time you will come to view them as inexpensive but never as throwaways.
If these knives seem inexpensive to you now, I reiterate that they are affordable quality.

All good suggestions so far. My first "real" knife was an Endura, and still use it after 10 years.

I would also suggest taking a look at a Benchmade 705 or 710.

if you are indeed looking for a swiss army, i've found the most useful tools are the phillips screwdriver, flathead screwdriver, blade, and can opener

Columbia River Knife & Tool knives(CRKT) and Spyderco knives are great knives for those who are new to the "knife world". Both companies offer a great high quality product for a rather modest price. And they both offer many different styles of knives too.

And everybody should own a Swiss Army Knife and a Leatherman Micra!

Welcome and good luck,
Allen.

Nuke, I'm sure you could beat an Endura with a stick, but it probably wouldnt help the knife much. :)

Seriously, for a first knife? I'd go with a Victorinox Swiss Army Knife of some sort. Good all around knife and easy to sharpen too.

Verzejd was looking for possible tactic/defensive use? Swiss Army knife & leatherman? Well, anyone attacking him with wine corks or loose screws or dangling button threads could certainly be driven off....;)

Along with all the obvious respect for Spyderco (my own included), I do agree with the CRKT suggestion. They offer some very good designs, from some good designers, reasonable construction, nothing exotic or top notch, but all good general purpose usability. OK, ya gotta settle for "made in Taiwan", but except for the political or philosophical arguments, there aren't any quality drawbacks; homegrown preferences aside, they aren't the proverbial "chinese POS". You can pick up something that's a distant cousin of a really good knife, for a very low cost, and figure out if it is what you really want for the long haul. If it is, you will have a good idea of where to look for a lifer, or if it isn't, at least get a good idea of what else you would rather have instead. In the worst case, it's a better knife than you'll find in the rack by the register at the local hardware store - these probably are the proverbial "chinese POS".
