Cannot find a better way to start the new year.Cold Steel has listed these two for 2019 which I think is huge. Its now possible to have an AD10 without having to shell out a grand or more. Looks like itll be around 150.00 for s35vn w aluminum liners smooth g10 maybe a liitle more for the AD15.If this is all there is that's good for this year its all I need !https://www.coldsteel.com/products/2019-products.html

I think they are Tawain ; theres also an A2 Trailmaster wish it was 3v that 5" grivory butterfly looks cool too.....

The AD-15 is something I am interested in. Also the new Outdoorsman in the new san mai and cheaper than the old version.

They have been making some of the higher-end folders in Italy recently, so that's a possibility. Am definitely interested in the AD15.

Both of these are must buys I loved my AD 15 but just couldn't justify that kind of $ sunk into a knife so I could not be more excited about it, I also love my 4max but the AD10 being a bit smaller will be a nice carry option in a design that I love. I can't wait to get my hands on these.

The black coated drop forged survivalist seems to come with some sort of handle inlays/scales. That's a nice little upgrade and the shape's simple enough to allow for custom scales to be made by the end user. I might have to pick one of these up for the camping kit.

The AD10 looks pretty nice, but I really am not a fan of the 1"? wide pocket clip. If it's not 1 inch, it's at least 3/4's ... why so fat?

Outside of that, I was hoping they might introduce 1075 steel into the machete lineup, instead of the 1055 they currently use. It would be interesting to test out and should provide a marked improvement in edge retention without sacrificing any significant toughness.

3V would have been my preference too but A2 is what they went with. Is A2 an upgrade, downgrade, or equivalent to O-1 Tool Steel?

Agreed, 3v would have been my pref also...

As far as A2 vs O1 - the main difference is the boost from 0.5% chrome in O1 upto about 5% in A2... which may improve rust speed (but of course, doesn't make it stainless being under %12) and should also improve the edge retention somewhat.

This might make me sell my AD15. I'd much rather beat on $250 folder that I can replace instead of a custom $800 one.

So are they not making any other new
Balisongs besides that grivory one?

That would be a big dissapointment :-(

Dang, those knives look nice. The website says the AD-15 is more comfortable than the AD-10, can anyone weigh in on this? Always thought Cold Steel was a little too rugged for me, so I’m looking forward to giving them another chance and hopefully abuse a folder instead of my Mora.

Properly heat treated, I think A2 should be an upgrade. I've used A2 from Busse Combat on one of their old models, and was suitably impressed!!

Should take a lovely grey patina, while being a little less rust aggressive. Should also hold an edge a bit longer, and maybe be slightly tougher.

If I were buying a custom, I'd probably take A2 over O1.

A2, will hold an edge a little longer, but will also take a little more effort to sharpen. *(this is info from a manufacturer of both o1 wood planes, and A2 planes from the same maker).

A2 should be significantly more red rust resistant due to the differences in composition.

Alloy________________O-1_________A2

Manganese__________1.2__________0.6
Chromium___________0.5__________5.25
Tungsten____________0.5___________--
Vanadium___________0.2__________0.25
Molybdenum_________--___________1.1

I am one that uses knives in 1095 steel in most of my pocket (similar rust characteristics with 01). So I'm not too scared of rust. 1095, and other 10XX steels, 52100, and others get rotated through my users.

I honestly don't think I have any A2 right now, but based on prior use, I'd probably not hesitate to get another knife out it.

If asked I'd choose 01 over A2 but that is a personal choice.
