My first Kurki I ever purchased is a Ang Khola 15" simple because they said it was a best seller. I dunno it was hard to choose one. I only bought one because I was gonna buy a knife and accidental stumbled onto Himalayan imports. Purely ON reputation from bladeforumns I decided to buy one. There service was pretty good. Especially since they had family in town. Only bad thing if it's as good as everyone says I'll be addicted and need at least 5 more:eek: I'm already looking for the next one I need.:D
What would be the top 3 favorite must have?? I need something to look at will I wait for the next few days:thumbup:

Amar Singh Thapa Knife is my personal fave. Still want an AK though. I think you landed the perfect first kuk. Congratulations!

My top 3 from the usual offerings are the Chitlangi, the M43, and the Sirupati.

My favorite of all is the Super CAK. It took something really special to dethrone the Chitlangi as my favorite khukri.

YUp I almost bought the Chitlangi and the Sirupati first. I didn't see the suer Cak or the Amar one??

Amar Singh Thapa Knife is generally shortened to ASTK and is the perfect combination between weapon and tool. its slender profile is offset by major width to the blade. My 18" is 1/2" thick and weighs between 36 and 38 oz. When you hear the term sharpened prybar, they really aren't kidding with the ASTK.*

Here's mine (bottom) side by side with my 20.5" Bonecutter (top):

*Although i use the term sharpened prybar, the only khuk that's warranted as a prybar is the chiruwa ang khola. But i seriously think the ASTK can handle anything a CAK can.

Well, my favorite three HI Khuks of the moment are these...

Two at once here, top is a 22" Sgt. Khadka Bone Cutter
below is an 18" ASTK Villager finish by Dil

next, sticking to Khuks strictly would be this one, the UBE
main.php

Top one is a Villager made by The Tiger and the bottom one is made by Dil

The Uncle Bill Especiale's or UBE's are great in the kitchen, which is where the little guy spends all of his time. The larger one spends time there as well but also heads out to the yard with me. I find the point invaluable for digging out those nasty weed roots. Plus the blade has nice chopping ability and isn't too heavy, even though it was made by Sher, who is famous for his thick, heavy blades. The fuller on it really lightens this one up and make it a great one to use. These have been rare of late but maybe Yangdu will bring them back for us. I hope so for all of your sakes since they are nice ones plus they are single edge so with some states disallowing double edged blades, these would be fine ones over the Ultimate Fighters. I imagine the shape of the blade also lends itself to self defense if this is a concern as well.

Now then, if we consider the entire line of HI products, I would add a couple more favorites to the list for you. Most folks do not consider the Tamang a Khukuri in the strictest sense but I think of it as just another variant myself. These are the hands down favorites of mine so far. They chop and baton well enough for my needs plus they would be a fine all around camping and bush craft knife IMO. The lightness and shape of this blade also lend it to being a great self defense weapon and finally I like the scabbard too. It holds the knife closer to the body to keep it from snagging on things and the frog is more of a typical type in my way of thinking for a field knife. I have three Tamangs, one with a Neem handle, one with a Dhar handle and this one with a Satisal handle s the one I tend to use most. I have wrapped the handle of this one with a bit of hemp cordage to make the diameter a bit bigger so it fits my hand better.

all three of my Tamangs were made by Vim

You can also go and check out the Giant Seax, made by the Tiger's nephew Santosh, I just received in the photo thread I posted here. The more I handle this one, the more I am sure it is going to become one of my favorite users. Last, if you want something with more reach, check out the Tarwars that Young Sher Bhadur makes for us. These come in two sizes, the regular Tarwar and a Mini sized one. My Mini Tarwar has a Teak handle made by Yangdu's father, Pala, on it which makes it an extra special one for me. This picture was taken before I oiled (BLO & Tung) the wood to protect it and make it even nicer looking. I really need to do the same to the Satisal handle on the big one now. ;)

So Iron Mike, you have a lot of choices before you. Himalayan Imports makes a LOT more than just the best khukuries anywhere. They make a whole line of knives (which I didn't really touch on), swords, an axe or two, and a number of other specialty items and edged weapons that sort of defy classification. Look through the Link Library to find a lot of reviews, and other ways to see the HI line so you understand just how large and comprehensive it is, this is in the first sticky. Also be sure to read the Saftey Information Thread. This is in the other sticky. You will be amazed at what you find and I am sure you will find all of us helpful and a lot of fun to read.

Welcome to HIKV Madness!

That scabbard of Tamang is one of the best looking sheath i've seen from H.I.

Did i mention it's Dark blue in nice grain leather?

My first and favorite is the M-43. Less weight than most of the ASTK's and truly in a class of its own. Due to its design which drops the blade and the handle it has the greatest whallop of em all. And that with increased tip speed and a thinner edge resulting in tremendous shearing performance. The drop of the handle also makes it a natural thruster. Exceptionaly lively in the hand as well.

If you can't decide what to get, that 15" Ang Khola was the right choice. It's pretty much in the middle of the spectrum. It'll either be ideal for you, or show you which way you want to go next.

Just be aware that "tops 3s" are all preference. What works for me, may not work for you. I think you see that with everyone giving different answers.

My top 3 kukri are:
1.) Chiruwa Ang Khola
100_0187.jpg

2.) M43
100_0123.jpg

3.) Chitlangi
(no pic)

Top 5 HI knives (sorry can't limit it to 3):
1.) Original Kerambit
100_0138.jpg

2.) R-10
R101.jpg

3.) SEAX
(strangely, I don't have a pic of mine)
4.) Ang Khola Bowie
100_0105.jpg

5.) Bura Bowie
100_0060.jpg

I'd probably have a Tamang in the top 5 if I had one).

Top 3 Swords:
1.) Tarwar
100_0068.jpg

2.) Falcata (top one in pic)
100_0085.jpg

3.) Giant Chitlangi Bowie (yeah, it says bowie, but it's really a broadsword)

Is your wallet curled into the fetal position, weeping, yet?

Iron mike?

Don't look or listen to these people.

They want you to join their ranks and forever have a tendency to "REFRESH" your screen, lurking for the DOTD. This is a bad crowd.

Just keep your 15AK and use it and love and abuse it and sharpen it and be careful with it and put your other monies into a nice interest-bearing passbook savings account and watch the investment grow. :)

Having money is no fun...
spending them on things "you want" is entirely different matter:p

@CPL
My word!:) CPL, that's some SERIOUS sh.......... um steel, you got there!
What is the second one from top called?

so we were supposed to go with our top three in each category? Now I get it then... well my Khuks stay the same, the Bone Cttuer, ASTK-V, and UBE which are all up there in my previous post...

Next then I suppose would be the KNIVES etc...

since it is clear the Tamangs (Dil) are being relegated to this category, then you have seen one of these already as well, my Tamang. Of course getting the new Bahadur Knife (Santosh) has got me in a bit of a spin over what would work better "in the wild" but I won't be checking into this first-hand until it gets a lot cooler outdoors...

main.php

Next would be a Karda of some variety, be it YCS, Plain Old, or Pala... this picture only has the YCS and "Plain Old" ones in it, made by either Kumar (Star of David) or Lok (Fish).

main.php

I also really like the Gool, this one has a Bayar wood handle and is made by the Royal Kami himself.

main.php

(centimeter scale this time)

for this last spot I have a bit of a tie...

the Vojpuri Bowie
main.php

my new Giant Seax with the Neem Handle (Santosh)
main.php

and finally my Trisul (Santosh again)...
main.php

Swords are easy for me... at least until I am able to score an Indonesian Sword (no dragon needed on blade though if it came up I'd likely consider it as well) and a Giant Chitlangi Bowie, which I have wanted now for some time...

so until then we have the Tarwars...
the one with the finger grooves was made by Bura
the other two by Young Sher, his former apprentice with the handle of the Mini made by Pala.

the Short Tibetan, by Young Sher
main.php

and the Bhutan Sword by Sher, the Tiger!
main.php

One more of these posts...and I'm speachless:o

Is it me or you've swapped the last two pics?
cause that "short tibetian" aint too short!:p

and a technical question:
Are the YCS kardas diff. heat treated and all that jazz too?
i.e. real live knives?

they are real live knives, I don't think HI makes toys Dan...

I am sure nothing is switched or mislabeled.
try giving the "Lost Pages" pdf or the thread I took all the pictures etc out of to get familiar with the product line. ;)

:oSorry my bad

Quote "The awesome and very martial Tibetan sword by bura
Apparently, there were two versions of the tibetan sword, a long one (36") and a short one (31")."

Still got things to learn:o

What is the second one from top called?

From the top of the sword pic??

100_0085.jpg

Top to bottom:
Falcata
Bhairab (basically an HI rendition of the Kopis swords from the movie Alexander)
Kukzilla (25" CAK)
Giant Chitlangi Bowie
20" CAK
Busse Combat Grade Fusion Battle Mistress (CGFBM)
