Hey there guys.
My 1st post here, so hi!
I've been lusting after a new (good) knife for a while (jus' an EDC). Haven't ever owned anything other than $30 folders which have served the purpose, but now I'm after something that I can keep, rather than have it fall apart in a year. Oh yeah, a few Swiss Armys too.

I've been doing a bit of research and it seems the Spydercos have a good rep. I was thinking maybe a Delica or a Manix 2 as they're nice and legal. I'm in London, so the cutting edge of the blade has to be less than 3".

Is it just a matter of personal preference when it comes to serrated vs. plain egde? Combos would seem pretty logical to me.

I'm probably looking to spend around the 100-150 USD mark, and I'm also open to anything other than a Spyderco. Oh yeah, and I'm pretty superficial, but I'd really dig a black coated blade. Hence the Delica2 Black blade or Manix2 Black.

Cheers for the help and thanks in advance!
Chris

Hi Chris,
Regarding the serrated vs plain discussion, much of that is preference, although the majority of bladeforums seems to lean towards plain edge in my experience, and this topic has been discussed many times (a search should give you far more information than I am capable of).

As far as the manix 2 is concerned, I purchased one for my father for Christmas and it is an extremely tough, well made knife that will take most any regular cutting use that I can forsee. (my dad uses it to cut apart nylon packing straps all day). I can't speak for the delica however.

Something that ive heard regarding knife laws in England (and quite a few other places if I recall) is that in addition to being shorter than 3" cutting edge, that the knife cannot legally have a lock on it (although I'm sure someone more knowledgeable than I will be along shortly to set the record straight) and as such I recommend the ukpk by spyderco. Within your budget you have many choices in that knife including titanium and carbon finer handles, it's a very sharp lookin blade to boot... Just a little food for thought, welcome to bladeforums, I recommend you cut up your credit cards now :D

I've also heard that locking knives are a no no in London. Spyderco does make the UK pen knife just for that reason. You could also look in the traditional section for a nice slipjoint. However if I'm wrong about the laws in your area, the Delica is a great knife. I would go with the full flat ground version.

Manix is over three inches plus no locking blades in the uk . But if yoh get one anyway make it a xhp manix 2 !!!!!!!!!

Spyderco Terzuola. Non-locking with a 3" CPM S30V blade.

I was gonna suggest the Bob T, too. It's really a great little slippie that can do a job far bigger than you'd think. If I was gonna carry a slippie again, that's prolly the one I'd start with. It's very secure when open, even though it doesn't "lock" in the traditional sense.

Yeah, if I couldn't carry a locking blade the Spyderco Terzuola or a UK Pen knife would be my choice for EDC.

However... If you can carry a locker then try a Paramilitary 2 by Spyderco. Although the cutting edge is 5/64" over 3".
