Greetings Gentlemen,
As one of the newest members, but I think the oldest at 70, I need your help. Only had a computer a short while and my typing sucks. I don't have time for a lot of research, so with your help, here goes. Any suggestions are appreciated.
Two knives, I'm considering are, a SOG agency or a Cold Steel r1 mil classic. It isn't about money, I want value. Either one needs some modifications, Like cut off about half of the top guard and sharpen about 2" of the false (top) edge. to start. I do like a leather sheath. I could write a book on poor knife choices, for what I hunt and why most fail, In my opinion. Not many 'store bought', are worth taking home.
My 1st choice would be, if one of you fellow's would consider making me a working knife, with some of my ideas, in a reasonable time, I'll pay you a fair price, and maybe sell a couple.
I hunt hogs with dogs, we don't carry guns for good reason. The knife has to work!
If I offended anyone, I apologize, but I'm old school. They don't go to waste, for sure.
Thanks for your time, consideration, and hopefully, a quick response.
Best Regards, Jack

Hey there, and welcome to the forums.

While I can't offer you any advice between the two knives you've listed, in terms of value, there ain't nothing like a knife that's been passed down from generation-to-generation. As for finding a knife that would fit your description, I would look around the Custom & Handmade Knives page and speak to some of the makers around here.

As a slipjoint fan, I'm rather partial to some of the knives that Ken Erikson and Todd Davison make. Either way, we're a friendly bunch and conversation is the key to making friends. Have a look around and once again, welcome.

Welcome to BF!

Pig sticking sounds fun and if you do a search you will find some thread's discussing just that. While not bad choices I wouldn't use either of those, there are better knives that have more value and that would probably work better. My personal choice would be this one.

WELCOME of BF!

between those choices both brands are well respected, though SOG from my experience has a bit better quality for your dollar. But as others have said for that price I would rather get a custom or see what else is out there. Beyond pig killing, what else would you use this knife for? Skinning? Camping? Tactical? all of those require a different design. It seems to me that you have found a starting place but since you are already talking modification (and we haven't even had the chance to corrupt you with our addiction yet) then I would look else where for your ideal knife.

Greetings Jack and welcome to BF:)

You have made good choices with the 2 knives you mentioned but as other forumites have mentioned you should look at some of the other options that are available to you.

I would give good consideration to a RAT Cutlery RC6

Value for money I don't think there is alot out there that can beat it.

I am a big Busse fan and the current HG55 available direct from Busse may also interest you.
Although it is a lot more money the steel, build quality and warranty is unmatched.

Good luck with your search:thumbup:

Welcome to BF sir! I just wanted to be part of the welcoming committee. I have no experience with either knife, so I cannot help. There are thousands of years of knife experience on this website. You came to the right place.

Welcome to Bladeforums! You've only got a few years on me. :D

You could have a very good knife made to your specifications by one of our many new knifemakers. We even have a special section of forums here for them, Knife Maker Specific Forums. Another good bet is to look over our Wilderness & Survival Skills forum, where many of them post pictures of what they're working on.

That said, I think you could choose between the SOG and Cold Steel blindfolded and get a good knife. They both do big knives reliably and those two are obviously modeled after the same original.
