I finally pulled the trigger and got an awesome desert tan dogfather.

I come from the 1095 world where I keep my well worn blades (from batoning and chopping) lubbed in breakfree clp.

I assume it's a good idea to keep my dogfather user well oiled too?

Thanks

Yes indeed my friend! Personally I WD-40 before chopping & batoning, and then after a thorough post-chop cleaning, I reapply mineral oil to my blades and I have never had a rusty blade. SR-77 is not as rust resistant as INFI (help me out here Hogs) so just keep an eye on it. Congrats on the Dogfather!!! That is certainly the biggest & baddest chopper to have come out of the Yard!

Yes, the Dog Dathers are made of SR77, which is based on S7. S7 is an extremely tough steel, an oft noted use being jackhammer bits. However, it is not stainless (more accurately not corrosion resistant); S7 tends to develop surface rust, as opposed to deep-pitting corrosion. Storing it in a dry environment with a light coating of oil will help prevent rusting. INFI is also not considered "stainless", but has proven to be very corrosion resistant; much more so than either SR77 or SR101.

if it is tan coated, then the blade is protected from rust. You could rub some chapstick or oil on the exposed edge.

Pssst.........they have their own forum and experts right here on BladeForums!;)

That's true -- the coating will protect the blade from moisture; I assumed he meant after some coating wears off.

A light coat of oil won't hurt, my DFLE got a few little rust spots, rubbed it with some oil and it came right off. I just wipe it down with a tuff cloth every now and again.

Congratulations. I just sent a payment on a DF cg earlier today. Mine will be used but that is ok with me as it was less pricey then I could find elsewhere and will present no strong desire to not use it to keep it looking pristine.

I love my DDf, took it and my CGFBM out today and did a little chopping on a hard piece of wood. I think the DDF is more comfortable in the long run.

I think so too...that Res c handle is much more cushion than the micarta or G10
