Not sure what you intent is, but I travel with a SAK like the Tinker or the Tourist. I lived in downtown Chicago for a couple years, in Lincoln Park. Often I walked home from work which was on Michigan Ave by the river. I even went to night school at DePaul for my MBA which was getting a little southside in my view. Never had any problems. Just because it is a big city you don't need to carry a concealed weapon. Just be smart.

For personal protection I am a big fan of CCW firearms, knives not so much...

My favorites: SAK Cadet (or perhaps Bantam to go superlight) is a great 2.5" general use pocketknife. Fallkniven U2 is good 2.5" lockback with very good steel.

Question: are you looking to buy a knife just for this trip, or are you looking to use this trip as an excuse to buy a knife? :D

If just a knife for the trip then a Byrd Robin in G10 might work for you. Plenty of handle, very stout, short, and drilled for left hand clip. If a hassle seems unavoidable about it, you can just ditch it and not be out much money. I would back it up with a small SAK like a Rambler or a small traditional folder of some sort so you have something tiny for light duty chores when in front of people.

If an excuse for a new knife, the Falkniven U2 is a very light, very inoffensive looking (about as non-tactical as anything with a black plastic handle gets) and a very nice cutter.

Why not one of these beauties:

Kyocera ceramic gentlemen knives. The top one is the expensive one with the high-end "HIP" blade material. I have it and it's an incredible cutter. The more affordable one at the bottom should be splendid as well.

ps if you prefer steel, indeed the Fallkniven U2 is fantastic too.

Something that I always need on business trips and rarely have on hand, bottle openers and corkscrews. So I'd suggest a SAK - plus you'll get tweezers, toothpick, and other tools that come in handy when traveling out-of-town and hotel living.

How long is a Spyderco Delica? It has a reversible clip and is tip up or down as well.

i would not recommend a neck knife, I lived in Chicago for many moons and CPD looks down upon them...beyond that enjoy its a GREAT city!
