I just recently moved to Boston and have always carried a folding knife (Emerson, Cold Steel...) but am now looking for the best 2 1/2" folder. I am a student and cannot afford anything expensive (over $100). Any advice or experience would be appreciated

I really like my Kershaw mini mojo

But it only has 440A and is about 60 bucks. Also it is AO, I don't know what Boston thinks about that...

I really, REALLY like my Greg Lightfoot Urban Shark

I've carried a small plain edge one for...four years or so. Has served me well.

Spyderco makes lots of nifty small knives. If you like a backlock, the Navigator or Dragonfly are nice choices. If you like a liner-lock, then the Cricket is a good bet. For the strongest possible small knife, the new SPIN is a great looking knife with an integral framelock. All are available well below $100 and should serve you for a long time without running afoul of the draconian anti-self defense laws of mASSachusetts.

There is the Spin & the Lava, and the knives that were mentioned by Lemon328i.

Lavan & LikeHike are soooo right about the Fallkniven U2!! GREAT little knife!!

I have a Benchmite and it's pretty cool, but its lack of a pocket clip is kind of a pain. Cops won't frown upon it as much, probably, since it locks closed too.

Make sure to visit that sweet little knife shop in Faneuil (sp?) Hall!

I second the Poliwog. Big, hefty, strong knife with the right length blade for you, and extremely cool looking.

The next knife I'm going to get in that length range is either going to be a Spyderco Navigator or Dodo.

Spyderco Kopa! It comes in a variety of handle materials. Fit and finish is top notch. Cutting portion of the blade is about 2". They go for about $105 to $120.

Also for something a little different, The CRKT Rollock in blue and black are on sale for $7.99 at Smokey Mountain. Blade is about 2.25".

Don't forget Victorinox Swiss Army Knives.

This is the area I specialize in for my EDC (thanks to Chicago law). The winner in the price-vs.-functionality award; a Robin from the Spyderco Bryd line of knives.

The Spyderco Dragonfly has a small grip for the blade size- too small, IMO. That's pretty much the problem w/a lot of knives w/sub 2.5" blades. The Robin is VERY inexpensive (under $20), good-enough steelwise, and has a comparatively-generous-sized handle and choil.

I prefer cheap EDCs, especially in city-environments where things tend to disappear. I also have to avoid anything w/assisted opening, so that leaves out the Benchmite and the Kershaw Chive/Scallion. Gerber is, well, Gerber.

Two others to consider-
Boker SUBCOM in AUS-8 (also very nice, my #2 choice)
CRKT Rollock (ubercheap)

Without further specifications for use and such, I must emphatically recommend the Spyderco Dodo! Fantastically versatile, ergonomic, and tough design.

Both knives have blades less than 2 1/2 inches and have version less than $50 (Mouselite for the Wegner).

Personally I think the Spyderco Dodo is the best knife available in the blade size for big city carry. Its still available in many places even though Spyderco has discontinued it. Its a cutting machine too. Get you a Dodo for around $80 to $85. They are going to be harder to find over time but I am pretty sure newgraham.com still has a few.
