Howdy,
Received the Bone Cutter yesterday. This is my first foray into the world of kukhris. The blade was rust free and barely razor sharp - it did cut hairs off of my forearm, but felt like a dull razor - and that's fine with me. I just would rather sharpen it the way I want it, and that goes for any edge I purchase. The blade near the tip was able to cut out a block of letters from a newspaper and cut, but eventually tore the newspaper when a single sheet was held vertical and the blade brought down slowly and back through it. Spine is 1cm across the back and goes from bolster to 3.25 inches from the tip where it begiins to gradually taper down.
Anyway, the craftsmanship was just fine, handle a tad small for ME = I wear lrg - x-lrg gloves, thickness of the horn handle was beefy toward the blade and tapered nicely down toward the bell. The horn is just slightly proud of the bolster. You are quite aware of the ring when in hand because it has a fairly acute angle around it's outer edge. The acute angle of the buttcap where it meets your palm/base of thumb is a bit too pointy for comfort and will be filed down.
So, I tested it's whackiness on a 2 in. piece of dead tag alder - see pic. Then on a 2.5 in. piece of dead red oak - see pic. Each pic shows a single cut attempt. I then whacked apart a 3-4 in. red oak log in several places - no pics though, as the log was not secured and not a good test for couning whacks, just good for getting in some wood-time. It performed here just fine, and I'm sure will be heck on green wood. I also tried it as a type of 'draw-knife' and felt it was passible in that capacity if you had no other option, it would work.
After the whacky test I brought it back in for some pics - and the blade at the 'sweet spot' could still cut out a phrase from the newspaper with no difference noted.
See pics.
This was all I really had time for during one of Jr.s naps. Time will be the real test when I can really whack a lot of stuff on a weekend.
Overall so far =
