Haven't posted here in a while. It's nice to be back.

So, my dad needs a new knife. He used to have a Kershaw Scallion, the completely black addition with the aluminum scales. Unfortunately he lost it.

This is what he's looking for in a new knife:

-Intended use is general EDC
-2 to 2.5" ish blade
-a non-metal handle, since he keeps the knife in his pocket in his keys and thus gets scratched up easily. I know that's probably not the greatest idea but I don't see how I'd stop him from doing it.
-generally thin, nothing too wide (which basically excludes Spydercos)
-One hand opening

Here's the catch: he wants it to be around $30. He's afraid of losing it again and doesn't want to have to pay much to replace it again. Any suggestions?

Don't overlook the Spyderco Air. I carry this one a lot.

Kershaw OD2 - 2.25", flipper, G10-like plastic handles, ~$20 on the secondary market

This is my Office EDC. Flips open like lightning, lightweight, disappears in your pocket, especially without the clip (my preference).

Cold steel Tuff/ Mini Tuff lite come to mind. Spyderco DF2 or Boker+ Nano/Subcom also might work.

Benchmade Lone Wolf Mini Landslide has a 2.8" blade and is $37.
Spyderco makes the Byrd Robin and is around $30 or so.
The excellent Spyderco Cat is around $45 and is 2.5" bladed.

Don't overlook the Spyderco Air. I carry this one a lot.
The handle of the Air scratches pretty easily. I had to find out so while carrying it in the pocket with my phone (plastic shell). Carrying it with keys in the pocket will ruin the scales very fast.

Personally I love my crkt free range hunter as an edc. Handle is great, very comfortable, comes crazy sharp out of the box and easy to put a sharp edge back on, but it's just shy of 3.5" so maybe a little too big.

Kershaw kurai is pretty sleek;
Buck Talus is a pretty classic design if he likes a combo blade with a few teeth.

Buck paralex has a few different options to choose if that's more his style?

If you want something made in the USA;
Buck vantage select small has a heftier grip if he has big hands, or the Buck Bantam is pretty basic and has a bunch of different handle options from snake skin to camo...

If he prefers a sheath to a clip, the Buck omni hunter is a nice design too. USA made.

I just ordered a Sanrenmu 7076 from ebay. It's a 2.6 inch flipper knife that looks like an amazing deal for 15 dollars, as sanrenmu usually is. It has sandvic 12c27 steel, phosphor bronze washers, two tone g10 scales. A guy on youtube said it has the best flipping action of any flipper he ever held. Comes in three different colors.

The excellent Spyderco Cat is around $45 and is 2.5" bladed.
The Cat I ordered from Amazon (received it just yesterday) was under $40; one quick check later and I find it still is (for how long, I don't know).

The spyderco dragongfly 2 might be right at the upper and of you length Req. But it is quite thin and the FRN handles can take a beating and not look used.

+1 for Spyderco Byrd line. Finch and Robin.

Kabar Mini Dozier < $20 and a few colors to choose from. I have a few of the bigger 3" models and they are great bang for the buck.

Let's not forget a Swiss Army knife! The less expensive ones don't have as many tools and aren't that thick. Nothing wrong with a good ole Classic for under $20.

KA-BAR Mini Dozier under $20, and a fine piece.

BRK Zancudo under $30, blade might be a tad over 2.5" mark.

CRKT Squid under $20, has a metal handle, but it looks good scratched up, like a well worn Zippo lighter.

Kershaw 3/4 Ton under $20, meaty little design.

There really is a ton of stuff out there that meets your criteria. Have an enjoyable hunt!

Oh wow the Cat is gorgeous. I've kinda taken a break from purchasing knives lately and have forgotten about some of the stuff companies offer. The Cat looks mice, only thing is he wants a thinner knife, not in spine thickness but rather the "height" of the blade (i.e. Spydercos tend to be wide due to the needed extra room for the hole). He wants this mainly for compactness when folded. BTW, anyone know where the Cat is manufactured? Thanks everyone for the suggestions; keep em coming!

EDIT: Found it myself. Tawain.
