2.5 Inch For Self Defense?

As some of you know, California has pretty good knife laws. There is one minor problem. Under CA law, although if I have a CCW I can carry a gun on school grounds, I cannot have a knife with a blade over 2 1/2 inches on school property.

When I work out on the schools gounds and track I like to have a knife with me.

What would you recommend for self defense with a blade of less than 2 1/2 inches>

Thanks for any input!

Give some thought to the Spyderco FRN Cricket. The Cricket is thin and light, and the rounded shape of the knife makes it fairly comfortable for waistband carry. While it's non-threatening in general appearance, the reverse s-curve of the blade makes it a nasty slashing weapon, should the need arise. Kind of like the Civilian's baby brother.

I agree, check out either the LaGriffe or the Cricket. Either one is nice.
Good LUck,

The CRKT Urban Shark (small) blade measures exactly 2 1\2" by my ruler, and it's a serious little knife, not to mention reasonably priced. The Spyderco Pegasus, serrated, is also within your limit.

The Cricket is a beautiful little knife, but it's more a utility than a tactical. It is hard to get a good grip.

La Griffe is all grip. Try a reverse grip, with that short hook of a blade protruding from below your fist, with a few good boxing moves, a few jabs, an uppercut.

I certainly would second the recommendation of the LUS. I have the large one, which really isn't very big, and it fills the hand, and has a "tactical" blade, and was in the top 2 so far as sharpness goes of my 20+ CRKTs.

I also would recommend the Spyderco Walker Ltwt. It is being discontinued, but most dealers still have them, and unfortunately, are selling at the regular price. If they ever get steeply discounted I'm buying another or two.

Here is an excerpt from PC 626.10 a :

. . . who brings or possesses any dirk, dagger, ice pick, knife having a blade longer than 2 1/2 inches, folding knife with a blade that locks into place, a razor with an unguarded blade. . .

So you're limited to nonlocking folders under 2.5" unless you can find a fixed blade that small that could not be called a dirk or dagger. While hawkbills are not made for stabbing, I'm pretty sure my Harpy, if it were fixed, would still be considered a "dirk or dagger." Looks to me like you're stuck with a tiny SAK or similar - not very good for self defense.

If you can find a university near by with a track you can use you can bring any size folder there.
