Hello All-

I'm looking for an online store that allows you to search or limit knife choices by blade length. The reason is that the cities around me allow only a very short blade for pocket carry. However, I don't want to miss a good knife in looking for it one knife at a time.

Thanks

Your location is ohio right...... what cities only allow a 2.5 in blade in ohio? My understanding of knife law in the state of ohio is that it can be any length as long as its not concealed, and i wasnt aware of any seperate city laws.... but i might be wrong .... Please correct me if im wrong.

I assume it's like this in Ohio, but in TX, the cities can add their own restrictions on top of state laws. So, TX state law doesn't prohibit folding/locking knives, but San Antonio prohibits a folding knife that locks and whose blade length is less than 5 1/2 inches. Which precludes most of my Spydercos and Benchmades!!

But the point is, I assume that almost any city in any state can add their own restrictions, so you should indeed check, using Google or something.

I'm in Ohio, by Cleveland, and many of the surrounding municipalties around here have 2.5 blade lengths on the book. Lately I've been trading off my longer knives for blades 3" and under, my longest blade now is on a Mini Manix. Sure 3" is still illegal, in most communities around here, but I don't put myself in situations were the cops are going to see or care what I'm carrying. Plus I'm in construction so a good knife is part of my workday.

I'm in Akron/Cuyahoga Falls area. Yep, the cities have their own restrictions. I just don't want to get caught illegal. I keep my nose clean, but ya never know. Plus, I like to say that I'm law-abiding and I can't if I'm not.

Any shops?

I'm in Streetsboro, not to far away, there are no restriction lengths here. I travel all around Cleveland and alot of the municpalities I travel through do have restrictions. That being said I know alot of guys that carry and have carried a 4" buck strapped to there belts for years, without any legal problems. Anything smaller than 3" is pretty much worthless to me as I need a fairly robust folder for stripping large cables. Hopefully if anything would happen where a LEO is questioning my blade length, he'll understand that it is a "work tool" to me, and not a weapon.
I don't know of any online stores that you can do a search by blade length. I've been mainly looking at some Kershaws and Spyderco's as they seem to have the largst selection of smaller blades. I've been considering the Spyderco Poliwog, and the Kershaw Mini Mojo. Fallkniven has a couple pocket knives, U2 for one with a 2.5" blade

To the very best of my knowledge there are no online stroes that let you search by blade length. Go vist a few on knife sites, like Spyderco, Benchmade, and Kershaw, and check out there knives.

Speed01, you said that San Antonio has a law that restricts any locking folder with a blade length UNDER 5 1/2", did you mean over 5 1/2", or does this mean you can carry a folder that is over 5 1/2"?

Hi Chewy1,

I think that is a wise call if there are any doubts. A knife with a blade length of 2.5" appears smaller and is more PC if seen. It is not likely to be thought of as a weapon, but a sharp 2.5" blade will serve most funtions well.

Chewie I share your search.

My company limits me to 2" blades. I got a couple but want more. I have been looking for a shop with the search option you describe and have not been able to find one. I hope somebody here comes up with one.

pet peeve: slippies are all described by closed length. Even when I look at the individual descriptions I cannot get a blade length on any of them. Bother!

Exactly! I'd like to see them measure the blade length from the slab to the tip, not just the sharpened edge, since that's more than likely what will be used against us in court.

The search continues.

Make sure you understand how the law determines blade length also. It might be the cutting edge, it might be "plunge depth", which, I think, is how much of the knife would go in if you stabbed someone up to the hilt. Stupid, I know, but still...
