2.5 X 48 belts on a 2 X 48 Grinder?

I have a gift certificate from Texas Knifemaker's Supply. In their catalogue they only have 2 X 72 or 2.5 X 48 sized belts. I have a craftsman grinder in 2 X 48. Will the 1/2 inch overlap cause me any difficulties in grinding? If so I can get the right sized belts at any number of places that you guys have suggested.

Thanks,

PJG

You'd have to have room at one end of the wheels to run the overlap without hitting something. On a grinder that only mounts the wheels on one side, this shouldn't be a problem, although you would have trouble doing plunge cuts or anything that uses the corner of the wheel.

I'd probably pick up some steel or handle materials from TKS and get the regular size belts elsewhere.

Just MHO,

Also, you can easily cut 1/2 inch off the belt width. With a straight razor cut through the splicing tape on the belt and just pull to rip the belt.

Be sure to cut the excess, if possible, off the side you use least for plunge cutting, since the factory edge is sometimes a tad cleaner.

you sure its not a 2x42? Thats what mine is.

Just checking so you dont order something you cant use :p
