Thinking of grabbing a 54. I believe those have a rep for strong pulls, which gives me pause. The 54 is available with blades facing the same way or opposing. When the blades have opposing orientation rather than opening on the same side is there more to grab onto making it easier to open?

My #54 Moose from the recent run has much firmer pulls than my older Harness Jack. Probably in the 7-8 range but definitely not a nail breaker.

The stout springs on the #54 gives me more confidence to use it a bit harder than I would other slip-joints within reason, almost like a safety.

The moose platform, one blade at each bolster, leaves you slightly more room for your index finger when the knife is open. Also it's not resting on the spring notch. I find it comfortable. That being said I carry a Big Jack platform, two blades on same bolster end, almost everyday. I don't notice the notch on this set up either. Both of my 54's are Northfields and have long pulls. I don't find the moose pull any different from the jack. The only thing I noticed is my moose seems more stiff from the half stop to open than my jack, but sometimes my jack is stiff to get out of the frame. If i noticed this it just needs a drop of mineral oil. Also I find that the lifter on a beer scout or a crown lifter fits great in the long pull to aid in extraction. The heft and stiffness of the 54 is comforting and of quality.

Thanks for the info. That's a nice one I've been tempted to get something similar...

The 53 Muskrat (similar size) is easy for me and I have RA...pulls at about a 6 but snappy and solid. It helps that the nail nicks are out toward the tip, better leverage.

SAK Guy that's a nice looking muskrat. If my memory is correct I don't think the 53's have half stops. Does yours?

It's my only GEC that doesn't have them. It's really smooth and secure opening and closing...I really like it.
