2 blades and the end of an era

Thought I would post this one up. It is the last knife I had with blades using my old dremel cut style of nail nick. I had a hell of a time finishing this one off. It has been on the work bench since Dec last year. It was the first time I have using bone handles on a knife and the first attempt at peening them I cracked the bone. After a few pointers from Kerry Hampton the second attempt has gone much better. Then once I had it all together I dropped it on the concrete floor and chipped a bit of the bone out on the end of the knife. You can see the cracks in it in the picture. Also the bone has picked up some oil or something from when I was cleaning the knife around the pins.

This was also the first time using a clay coated heat treat with 1075 steel. I probably left the clay a bit close to the edge but the hamon came out ok I thought. Also I was getting ahead of myself when I applied the clay and I forgot to stamp my makers mark on it.

Being the last one of my folders done with the dremel cut disk it is the end of an era for me. Also the start of a new one, multi-blade knives. There are a couple more on the bench waiting to be done now. Despite all the problems I had with the handle on this one the one good thing to come out of it was how nicely the action and fit of the blades came together. Using the more fragile handle materials is something that I will learn and improve over time.

Anyway onto the specs:
Blades and springs: 3mm 1075 steel
Bolsters, liners and pins: Stainless
Handle: Plain old bone.
Closed length: 105mm (4 1/4") the largest slipjoint I have made
Blade edge: 75mm (3") so it is legal in the UK.

Great looking piece, even for a '2nd'. I like users, so it'd be just fine for my uses anyway. I love the Ericksons & Hamptons & all the others, but you've got talent, too, and the humility to seek input. Keep it up - every country needs a few custom knife makers!

Also, you might be able to just dip the whole piece in mineral oil, and darken & blend the staining in. Just a thought.

thx - cpr

Heck ya. I'd put her in pocket any day. Even with the "flaws" she looks great.
Are you going to be doing your nail nicks on a milling machine now instead of the dremel ?

Hi Cubane -

Nice looking knife!

Thanks for the pictures - you did a really nice job on it!

best regards -

Seen it on the U.K. & Oz forums already. Liked it at first sight, and still liking it now mate. If I had the spare cash I'd be on your doorstep already!
As 338375 says, the fact it's a second means that I'd be comfortable carrying & usin it at work - something I'd have to build up to with a 'perfect' knife.
The pattern itself is one of my favourites & I really like your interpretation.

Cheers I will try out the mineral oil thing I was wondering if I could just soak it in oil so at least it is consistent.

Yes I got a small bench top milling machine during the past year so now they get done with a fly cutter. Given how easy it is to do I am kicking myself for waiting so long to switch.

Thanks for looking everyone. Your comments have definitely made me feel better about showing the knife off. I didn't really want to show it off with the obvious flaws but despite them it has a really nice weight in the hand, I could get used to a larger knife. Next one I try with a bone handle I'll have to try jigging and dyeing the bone.

Thanks for sharing! Its great seeing your progression. Looking forward to seeing examples of your latest work.

This is a handsome knife, and I quite like the oil stains around the pins-it gives nice character imo.
